Dog Day Afternoon
It may turn out that your volunteer human society coud be nothing more then a bunch of white trash trailer park people trying to make a hunting dog out of him. I am only saying this because here in Kentucky, where white trash is plentlyful, there have been several cases this past year of so called puppy mills and animal shelters that turned out to be run by some trailer park lady with over 100 animals livinig in filth and disease most were abandond or runaways and never had a chance at a better home.
Sorry to be so depressing but its the reality of some people.
I think what your doing is great and hope that it does turn out better then some cases I have seen on the news.
Good luck to you and the dog.
I will second the name Harley because Supercrew just does'nt sound right when you call for him.

Time to end the story, not happy but not unhappy.
Start with the moral of the story. Never, ever try to have a sensible discussion with an animal rights activist and I say this with absolutely no disrespect to the lady.
Went to Petsmart 8 AM to see if adoption booth was manned. Nope.
Called Humane Soc folk again got voice mail. Listened a bit more carefully and got the gist they are not taking any more animals in and you should contact local Animal Control Facility (pound). Figured maybe they took the dog there. Called Facility, your tax dollars at work, they absolutely will not give out info over the phone. You must come to Facility and go through kennels to see if you can find your dog. Took two hours off from work, drove to facility went through kennels, no dog.
Returned to store, brought up their web site and found another phone number. Got a real human being, one of their foster dog parents. Extremely helpful and cooperative, said she would call Executive Director of the Humane Soc. and have her call me.
Spent 40 minutes on the phone to no good. Firstly, I did not own the dog says she. Semantics says I. The dog has been more or less under my care and in my possesion for 4 days and it was observed by perhaps a dozen people that it had been abandoned by an obviously challenged/destitute companion/owner.
You have no papers, no vet documents and no receipts says she.
Aha says I, in my pocket is a receipt for $90 and an estimate for $900 to $1300 to treat heartworm. Further, I must have owned 20 dogs and even more cats etc. in my 63 years and had papers etc. on a half dozen as must 90% of pet owners.
Well says she, you abandoned the dog. My first reaction is to say aha to myself. If I abandoned it, that is prima facea evidence that I must have owned it but I kept that one to myself. Instead I said, I did not abandon it I just could not pick it up that night and ensured that the vet assistant would turn it over to the Humane Soc whoes bus was still outside and I would try to sort it out tomorrow. Says she I was standing there when you called and the assistant said you said you did not want the dog. I said, look, Maam. you were totally outside that conversation, listening only to a gentleman from the Caribbean who spoke poor english, was not really well educated and probably poorly paid who just wanted to finish his shift. He didn't need this aggro. My response was that I had paid a fair chunk of cash to get the dog checked out, I had made multiple attempts to contact her organization by phone and email, I had spent two fruitless hours going to the local pound and I had searched out yet another phone number to get into contact with her. Is this abandonment???
This led to a 20 minute discourse from her side about their "Charter" with the State Agricultural Dept. and all the rules/rules/rules that govern that Charter. A dog abandonment report was filed, by her, she took possession of the dog and the Charter will be followed, no exceptions. They have to keep the dog for 7 days to give the "real" owner a chance to claim the dog.
That ain't going to happen says I. OK says she, as an exam was given and she had the paperwork the dog has to go through the prescribed treatment for heartworm and that takes three months. If the dog survives it then comes up for adoption. BTW, she also called the house and I have the short course version on my answering machine tape which says more or less the above.
To put the icing on the cake, she says that since I as a real person am listed on the abandonment report the chances of my getting the dog are slim to none. Nothing personal, just the Charter.
I finally played my last card saying if I am listed as the Abandanor, logic says I am the owner. The fine for such is $100 and I will pay that fine, I will give you the name, phone #, license # and name of the firstborn child of my vet.I will sign a legal affadivit that I will provide all the treatment you are proposing.
Win, win. Dog gets a home and all his meds, you satisfy the other half of your charter pledging to find proper homes for pets and you spend no money.
That broke her pick and she went back to the Department of Agriculture story and assured me the dog would not be put down.
Wished the lady a nice day. BTW litnfast, it is that exact dog.

Bill:
Sad to say, not many people like you exist anymore. Having to deal with bureaucratic b.s. like that would try the patience of a saint, which I'm sure you're not!
I think I would have gotten just a little bit nasty after that kind of runaround. In a polite way of course, hehe.
It must come from having to deal with the occasional ****head that walks through your door now and then. We all get them, don't we.
Anyhow, keep it up,man. You rock!

I'm so dense, does this mean that you are going to eventually get the dog, "Harley", or what. I couldn't tell from your post. Man, show her this post and the days it occured. That should at least show ownership. This sucks, is it because those folks always see the worst in people that they don't trust some one who genuinely wants to provide for an animal or what? So much for "Good Samaratism". Good LUck, man Ive been close to there. Wish you the best. Jon
End of Story
I forwarded this thread to my Son and he asked me "What finally happened, did you get the dog"?
I was in a state of high dudgeon when I wrote that last passage and obviously took for granted you would understand the outcome through all the gobbledygook I wrote.
So, no I did not get the dog back. And no, I will not try to adopt the dog some 3-4 months from now when it finishes the treatment. There were two issues here. Firstly an infatuation on my part with this poor mutt. I have not had a dog for some years now and this one was very lovable. Secondly, I wanted the dog rescued and not put down.
To rephrase a little of what I said earlier in the thread, this very dedicated woman and I did not get along. The conversation continually got into my logic versus hers and, of course, the "Charter". Bottom line for her was that she would do her best to make sure I would not be considered as a potential adoptee because of her interpretation of the "abandonment" issue.
As to the dog's future, I did not mention that not only do they never put a healthy dog down, their "Charter" essentially says they must find a "suitable" home for the dog. He will be OK, one way or the other whether he likes it or not I guess.
So, the secondary objective will be handled I believe and I have dropped the issue. On the other hand when I went to the local pound I did see some neat dogs so I am back to negotiating with Pat again. Wish me luck.

Yes I know that! Was just a litt;le sarcasm I guess you did't get at the time. You know Lincoln = car. Sorry to hear about the dog, but at least maybe he will find a good home. Be careful about going to the pound, been there done that. Came home with another dog I didn't need, but all goes well, and my old Lab will be leaving us soon I think and that is always hard. Especially after 11 years togeather and many hunts. Jon
