Car Salesman $$$

I'm curious, how much money do car salesman make. Are they paid by the deal or draw a salary or both or what. And if they are paid by the deal what's the juiciest deal you ever did? Any current or ex salesman out there want to clue me in. Thanks

The salary is small, the bigger the profit for the dealer, the bigger the salesmans piece is.
My father-in-law used to sell cars. This is my favorite story.

Man drives on the lot and looks at new Fords, never talks price.
He says I'll take this one. They step into the office and start doing the paperwork for 'MSRP'. They are done and as the man is walking out, he stops and says, "oh, almost forgot" and tosses my father-in-law the keys to the car he had driven in.

A trade-in had never been discussed.
There was nothing allowed for it, the man had paid MSRP.

My father-in-law hid his shock and without missing a beat said,
"Yes sir, we'll get those tags transferred over for you. You can remove your personal items and be on your way."

(The man had a clear Title too)
MSRP plus a car valued at 7 or 8 grand.

So, when you read a question on this site that you can't believe is serious, think again.

So your father-in-law took adavantage of a stupid person? That's not very nice.

Unless there is more to the story?

Oh look, I'm a "member" now. How neat.

Maybe you missed the part where I said my father-in-law was a car salesman?

My buddy is a Ford salesman, and for the most part he's a good guy, tries to help people as much as possible(he's the reason I drive a Ford), but when stupidity mixes with arrogance they usually have their fun, and make some money. I've heard stories similar to the above, but never quite that bad...

ranger81, wanted to know how they make their money.
If everybody just paid invoice buying a car would be like buying a loaf of bread. Why would you need salesmen?

Successful salesmen get you to pay more for the vehicle than another 'nice' salesman.
The dealership wants more profit so it wants successful salesmen on their lot, not nice salesman.

There are people who are terrified of the car buying experience and rightfully so. They get took for a ride without a car involved.

Salesmen have a right to make as much money as they can just like you or me. They have kids to feed and most of them have wives and girlfriends to support. It gets expensive.

So I guess that justifies lying/cheating a person that is not as experienced out of $$. Salesmen also have the right to rot in hell when they die too. Just because someone has a dishonest job, that doesn't make it right. Oh yeah, i'll beat you to the punch Raoul and tell myself to kiss your ***.

But Frank, where's the honor? Where is the damn honor!?!

Oh, and I just bought the wife a Ford Explorer last month, the salesmen was new, and we walked away with a very clean deal. They only tried to screw me 3 times instead of the usual 7.

Now, if salesmen didn't try to rip us off, then we would have nothing to feel good about when we leave the lot thinking that we got a `good` deal. It's a very sporting process, buying a car, and if you are stupid, then you pay too much. No one forces anyone to buy any certain vehicle from any particular dealer, you are free to leave any time you want and not buy any particular vehicle, so if you get taken, then you should have shopped around and got the deal you wanted.

I agree with that, salesmen should be aloowed to rip us off, but when we catch them, we should be allowed to beat the ever living fawk outa them.

That;s how it should be

Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree with you, at least when it comes to new vehicles. You see that “new” vehicle smell is NOT really a “new” vehicle smell it is a toxic gas used by auto manufactures and dealers. If affects the brain cells in such a way, and unbeknownst to the individual that “forces” you to “think”:

”I have GOT to have this vehicle”

There is no known cure for this toxic gas they use except “experience”. I now have experience about this toxic gas they use.

They way to defend yourself is to simply NOT get into the toxic gas “zone” or in other words DO NOT get inside the vehicle.

Negotiate the deal/price etc PRIOR to getting in the vehicle. This way your brain cells will be firing correctly and you will NOT be under the control of this toxic gas they pump into new vehicles…

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED…

If you found your employer had made a mistake on your cheque in your favor, would you be in his office giving it back? If not maybe you too could be a car salesman.

01 XLT Sport,
Don't forget to print a copy of this as a backup reminder the next time you go looking at Lightnings. Be careful though, rumor has it some dealers have borrowed technology from Las Vegas casinos and are now pumping the "toxic gas" into the showrooms...
