Looking to get an L.....

Ok , it's not for me but for my wife (yeah right ).

I hope this is the right forum for this.

My wife drives a TrailBlazer and has always been a Chevy gal. We looked at the new Chevy SSR , too much money for too little. She didn't like the cramped interior. So I mentioned the Lightning to her and showed her some picutres. She says "yeah I guess they look nice." Like , no big deal.

She came home last night and said she saw a Ford truck with SVT on it and when she tried to race it ..... well you know the rest. I told her that it's the same truck I showed her and she got really excited and said she wants to drive one and made me show her the pictures again.

The real good thing is my brother is a Ford employee and knows the truck manager real well at the dealership where he works. He talked to his buddy and said we get a real sweet deal.

It would be great to convert her to Ford.

A few questions,

What options , if any , should I look at ?
Should I get an extended warranty ?
Is it a good daily driver ?
How is the comfort ?
What kind of real world mileage can I expect?
Are the 04s out yet and differences besides body style ?

Thanks in advance

I sold mine and bought a Cobra, but I will try to help.

1. The only option available that I am aware of is the tonneau
cover.

2. Extended warranties are not necessary in my opinion. But
there are others that feel more comfortable with them.

3. They are EXCELLENT daily drivers. You have the convenience of
hauling anything you want, and have 380 horsepower at your
disposal.

4. Very comfortable.

5. I had my truck heavily modified, 495 hp/628ft.lb torque, before
it had 1000 miles on it so I can't remember my stock mileage,
but after the mods I was getting 17-18 on the highway, and
right around 14 in town. (I have a heavy foot)

6. I know of no changes in the '04 models.

I still have my Supercrew for a daily driver, but from time to time I really miss the Lightning. When this happens I just go out to the garage and take a look at the Cobra and the feeling goes away.
BUT, when the 3rd Generation hits the market I will be first in line to get another one.

The L's only option I believe is the soft bed cover. I personally wouldn't waste the $$ on an extended warranty, unless you just want the peace of mind. Expect about 10MPG city, 16-17 highway. The L's are a very comfortable daily driver, esp for a truck. They are still the old body style, which IMO looks better than the new f-150s. It all comes down to if you want the extra power or not. Any performance vehicle will not be quite as reliable as it's more tame siblings. But with the re-design of the heads on the L starting in '03, I think you will be fine.

You would probably get more responses in the Lightning forum, but I'll give it a shot.

Options: the only options available are the 6-cd changer and a soft tonoue (sp) cover. I may be wrong about the CD for the 04's, I know it was an option prior to '03.

Extended Warrenty: If you are planning on performance mods, then I would say no. You'll be lucky to keep the 36/36000. Otherwise I think this is a matter of preference. Depends on your financial position and how long you plan on keeping the L. I've got an unmodded (for the most part) 2000 with 42000 miles and reliability hasn't been an issue.

Daily Driver: You bet.

Comfort: It's no King Ranch, but it's very comfortable. Good lumbar support, comfortable seats.

Milage: I get 12-14 MPG, I've seen others that very from 9 - 16 MPG. Keep in mind you can't put 87 Octane in an L. Minimum is 91. 93 or 94 is preferred.

The '04's are the same body style as the 1999-2003's. (F-150 Heritage). The new generation of lightnings won't be out until the 2006 Model year (Late 05?)

Hope this helps.

Yeah, why pay for the extended warranty? That's just longer to wait before you can mod the hell out of it!

There are 2 options: bed liner and tonneau cover (6-CD is standard in 2004); try looking here for the basics.

If you're not going to modify it and you're going to keep it a long time, then the extended warranty can be a bargain.
It drives extremely well. My 2004 rides very harsh on choppy roads, has very comfortable seats, has little storage room inside, and sucks the gas DOOOWWWNN in the city/highway is suprisingly good.
The 2004 is the same as the 2003 with the exception of the re-introduction of the color Silver Metallic.
