I don't think it would be too hard for a person to make up a fake name, do all of that and make up a bogus story, and then go back to the original name and life. Then unless he accidently let something slip, nobody would ever be able to find him.
Uhhhh....kids,
the story is from the Weekly Wolrd News,
The folks who brought us such stories as President Clinton signing Peace Treaty With Aliens From Outer Space....
Here's some covers of their paper....

My class actually did a research project on alot of these tabloid magazines when I was in HS.
It was VERY entertaining and we learned alot. Suprisingly, the Weekly World News and also the Enquirer both publish 'half-way' true accounts of some stories... others are totally bogus.
We found that about 8% of the stories that we researched were true, another 22% were based upon something that had been said (like a local thought they saw a sea-creature off of Cape Hatterus etc... aka: sea monster), and the other 70+% were totally made up and the locals had no knowledge of anything going on.
I, personally, researched the Loch Ness Monster off the coast of Cape Hatterus, NC. To my suprise, my letter was published in the local newspaper in the 'News of the Weird' section. They made fun of it and even published a picture from the Weekly World News. They made it amazingly clear that it was a pile o' poo. Very humerous too.

I remember one that someone else researched and actually got a letter back from the individual mentioned in the article.
If memory serves me right, this guy was struck by lightning while inside the funnel portion of a tornado. He said it wasn't necessarily true as it was told in the WWN but, said he was, indeed struck by lightning while photographing a tornado.... after being struck, the tornado went for him and tossed him about 350 yards away from where he was photographing. They found his camera 2 miles away and were able to develop the film.
Wild stuff.

One of the fun things about the WWN is that most of their stories are made up, and they freely admit it. Owned by Nat. Enquirer, but unlike the NE, they fess up that it's all bogus and all in fun. I've bought it a couple of times when the cover is so far out in left field that I can't help but laugh. Thre is some truely creative stuff in there sometimes...

I have looked for a while now and have only found two sources of this story. One is the Yahoo article which I believe originated from the WWN article. You would think with something like this, the New York Papers would be all over it but I haven't found anything.
Oh well, must be one of those "Area 51" stories going on here again. They say that it doesn't exist but you cross the line and you end up in jail. Man, it must suck to be in jail for something that doesn't exist.

I truly love the Weekly World News. It is the best entertainment newspaper out there. They really have some creative people working at that paper. It never fails to put me in a better mood no matter what ha happened that week. BatBoy Rocks! I really liked it when the headline screamed "SADDAM AND OSAMA ADOPT SHAVED APE BABY" (posted that one on the board at work), a couple of weeks after proclaiming that "OSAMA AND SADDAM GET MARRIED IN SECRET CAVE CEREMONY". Not to mention the world's biggest weekly crossword puzzle.
I'll keep buying it. Harmless and fun, and there really isn't enough fun in the world.

The Osama/Saddam Wedding cover was hilarious. Osama was in a tux and Saddam was in a wedding dress. Funny *****....I nearly bust a gut laughing when I saw that in the checkout line.
These tabloids are generally annoying...but sometimes downright ridiculous and funny as hell.
