Is the pontiac gto a tread
The new GTO is not even made by GM! It is made by a company the GM owns in Australia. However it is powered by a GM/Chevy?pontiac/Olds/GMC engine.
It is kindof ugly but it sure runs great and is very fast.

Bloomquist,
The car in the top picture is a Firebird not a GTO. I do think the new GTO is classic American muslecar. It just sucks it's not made here. It is made by Holden in Australia. It is rearwheel drive v-8 that seats 4 or 5 with a choice of manual or automatic trans. I do think it looks like a Cavalier. I'm sure it will be classic GM. They will get it perfect after two or three years and kill it!!!
Don,
I've heard it will have the Australian 9-bolt. It is a good rear end. They have an almost 8" ring gear, bolt in axles (no c-clips) and hold up well. The 89 Turbo Trans AM's (and some other F-bodies). The TTA guys put 400-500 HP through them without much trouble. The TTA has a Buick engine on it. It is one of the easiest cars to get into the 11's.

Well, it might make a heck of a sleeper. The body definently has "family ride" written all over it. There might actually be a market with guys that can convince theire wives that it would make a good family car.

Australia is blessed with not only GM but also Ford products that we can only wish were available here.
The new GTO is based on the Holden Monaro with tweaks to meet our various regulations.
For Ford stuff, try www.fordaustraliaforum.com for starters. There are lots of other forums in Aust that you can find through Google or some such search engine.

I have a 76 Trans Am myself, so I've been around all years of Firebirds for a long time, as well as GTO's and I know them really well.

Here's a closeup of the front btw-

It does look like a GTO, but it is a 68 Firebird with a one piece fiberglass tilt front end. Notice the dzus fasteners on the bottom of the front fenders. Also look at the rear 1/4's. They have simulated lovuers, and the rear bumper is small and wraps around the 1/4. The GTO rear bumper goes from mid1/4 to the bottom of the 1/4. How do I know this? I have a 68 GTO convertible.
Sorry I don't know how to post pictures but look at this car

You'll see all the same styling clues.

They are not bad cars at all, but they are ruining another name. -Mat-
i hate to say it and i know some will disagree but stock for stock the new one would kick the cr@p out of an old one, sorry
pontiac put the last true performance v-8 in the tran am in 79, all auto maker have taken this route. you have to admit that the "hemi" marketing is working for dodge just as the cobra name works for ford., as is the SS for chevy. chevy calls the top dog corvette engine ls6 the same name of the ls6 454 that went into the 70 ss chevelles, i dont like it but i like the performance numbers of the new corvette,
67 Bird-
(also, notice where the GTO badge is on the front grille, you can also see it on thw wheelie car)
69 GTO-(Judge) also, notice the Firebird grille is different than the GTO and the Wheelie GTO, the GTO's had the "bar" grille.

Also notice the GTO grille surround is painted body color, wheras the firebird is Chrome. Another difference is the GTO has the hideaway headlight option whereas the F-birds didn't. I think that makes it a pretty clear case. I wish I could find the rest of the pictures from that run, he rolled over and landed upright again, and managed to do a 10 second 1/4 still!

That wheelie car is a Firebird. The body colored bumper doesn`t mean anything on a drag car with a one piece glass nose. Also not all GTOs had a body colored bumper, the endura bumper was an option though it did come standard on the Judge.Even if that wheelie car wasn`t a Firebird (which it is) what makes you think its a GTO ,could be a regular LeMans.

sorry.
