Little Mechanics Quiz

ok here is a quiz for people that think they know a lot about cars. try and tell what the problem may have been. i already know what was wrong and it has been fixed.

my friend has an old Jeep Wrangler (not sure of year) with manual tranny. we were driving, and it was making this really weird noise and jerking very hard. after a few minutes it was fine and didnt have another problem for a while. we went out to my farm and went mudding for a little while. we left and there were no problems for a long time. getting near home it started jerking really hard and it wouldnt go over about 8 MPH, even stepping on the gas. it stalled a few times but started right back up but still jerking a lot and going slow. we pulled over, got out to check it out. i look under the jeep and the entire exhaust system was bright red, as in metal that is red hot about to melt. my friend called his dad to come get us and his dad got there, started it up, no problems all the way home. next day took it in to get checked.

what do YOU think was wrong. im really bored so i thought i would quiz yall.

HINT: something most people would NEVER think about in that situation.

You didn't say how old it was, you just knew it was older. Many years back they used to make the exhaust manifold and header pipes with steel liners. My guess is the steel liner ruptured and collapsed, blocking the exhaust flow, thereby restricting back pressure causing the problem.

If not, it sounded good didn't it?

I'm guessing it was probably fuel or timing related. Maybe a clogged fuel filter or vacum leak causing a lean condition? Or a crank sensor that pulled too much timing?

Not knowing what year the jeep was my guesses would be:

Faulty EGR system/valve/controler causing engine to run really hot.

Clogged Cat.

Collapsed muffler internals or a banana in the tailpipe

On an older mid 80's jeep a bad/malfunctioning air pump

My guess is that a woman dove the Jeep the day before.

I think that the Nut behind the Wheel is the main problem here

Running extremely lean? Not sure if it could cause that...

Maybe something temporarily restricted fuel?
