Tis the season

. . . for credit card fraud.

Monday, I went to the bank to get a bit of cash for the brat to go out of town with. I walked up to the teller and asked "Please check my balance and make sure it's there. I don't know if my check cleared yet, and don't want to pay a fee if it isn't."
She says "Hon, you have been having a good time. You're over drawn $1,500"
I was like "No, really."
She says "dear, you have been on a shopping spree, and you are seriously over drawn"
I told her I have been working on my house all weekend and the last places I went was friday to Sam's club for a buck 25, and Sears, for about the same - $125.
Then she says these purchases all were done today (mon), and with my 'other card'
I told her I don't have another card.
She says "it shows here you do."
I pull out my card and tell her this is the only card I have, unless they are combining my personal account with my business account.
She then reads off the card number of an old CC I used to have with my business account.
I told her that was deactivated when I changed my name, got the new one, and activated it.
She tells me "someone got ahold of it, and activated it. You should have cut it up."
I told her I did cut it up, and there is no way anyone had the card, and even if they did, I never sign them, instead I write 'please check ID' on it to fill in the space, so nobody else can sign it. Furthermore, there is no longer any person with that name, so nobody has an ID with that name on it.
She told me the charges were too new to see what they were, or how they were done yet, so in a few days, I have to fill out a report.
Meanwhile the account is, of course TOAST.
I got home, and called the main branch office and asked: How in the heck someone can use a (1) deactivated card number, for a (2) name that no longer exsists, with a (3) business card that is hard to charge anything online with (name and or address verification almost always makes even ligit purchases fail), (4) without the 3 digit verifiaction number on the back, and make purchases against (5) insuffient funds. I was told we'll just have to wait till they go through (appearently they can't stop it) and I'll have to fill out a report, so they can investigate it to see how the card was used. I asked why were these purchses approved when the funds weren't even in there? and she just reinterated the "wait and see" attitude.
Two hours later VISA fraud prevention called, to ask me some questions about my recent activity. I began to tell her about what my bank said, and ask her those same questions, that I had asked the main branch on the phone. She told me I would have to take that up with my bank. She did say that I wouldn't be responsable for them. Then she told me to call them, and tell them that there was confirmed fraud. (DUH) I was like "Yeah, because they were sooooooo helpful when I called them a few hours ago"
Appearently all some loser needs is a card number. The name and address can be wrong, and there is no need for the 3 digit verification number on the back. Hell, I thought I was safe because I change my card numbers about once a year, just in case. and in this case, I even changed my name.
So now the account is seriously TOASTED, and the checks from my contract are made out to my business name, so I can't deposit them anywhere else.
End result = broke for the BIG holiday shopping kick off sales!

I feel for you ATST. Some jerk stole my $2,200 latptop from the army mail room (as in hadn't been delivered to me yet). They know who had it last, but he can't remember who he gave it to. And as we all know the goverment doesn't like to give money to anyone so even though they finished the investigation (never found it or who took it) they haven't said they would give me my money back yet. I guess people aren't satisfied with what they earn themselves.

Good luck with that, btw, where I live, a lot of people don't ask to see ID, so that could be one way the perp got away with it.
