Unhappy F150 needs larger gas tank

Does anyone know why Ford does not make a larger (35 gallon or larger) gas tank for the F150?

I had a 2001 Supercrew which had only a 25 gallon gas tank. It was frustrating to go only 350 miles before fillups.

If the Suburban can install a 40 gal gas tank why won't Ford?

Well the Suburban needs a bigger gas tank. I believe it is a safety issue. You see the fine people that make the Suburban believe that while those that own a Suburban wait on the side of the road for the tow truck assistance it is better to keep the Suburban running in case it is cold outside. Kind of thinking of the children I believe.

If you are driving a Ford you don’t have to worry about being stuck on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance. Also, note that you are going to consume a lot more gas trying to tow your buddies broke down Suburban. They have a bigger fuel tank so no need to tow them, perhaps bring them some snacks while they wait…

as a college student, and with the price of gas for the truck, 25 gallons is big enough

Talking Larger Gas Tank Does not mean bad gas mileage

The 2001 Supercrew I had got about 17 mpg but my 1996 Suburban which has a larger gas tank by 15 gallons gets about 18 mpg.

So my question remains why not give a bigger gas tank?

I know that the Suburban has the spare tire in the cargo area which maybe the reason why it has the ability to carry a larger gas tank.

Believe me, it is much more convenient to go 600 miles to the tank than 350.

FT.

As you said, it's mainly a space issue...the spare tire is under the bed and takes up a good bit of real estate down there.

It's probably only available on the long bed right?

edit:
Ok I went to build one.
Shortbed: larger tank only available with supercab.
Longbed: any model.

I didnt try seeing if styleside vs. flareside made a difference.
Not available on supercrew.

my 01 suburban has a 32 gallon tank, the older ones had a 40.
my suburban get high14 to middle 15 in the city. my supercrew gets 12 to low 13 with a 25 gallon tank. so the truck could go about 325 miles and the suburban can go about 480.
neither has been in the shop for anything. So bigger tank, better acceleration, better mpg, 50k miles and no problem, Now what is the advantage to having a ford?

having a smaller tank, so smaller more frequent gas charges is not an advantage to me.

btw. i love my supercrew, accept for the mpg and the small tank.

ford made the 2004 f150 bigger to the tune of about 500 lbs more, did they make the gas tank bigger?

Yes, the '04 F150 supercrew has a 30 gal tank.

Hmmm, comparing the Suburban to a SuperCrew on relative gas mileage and gas tank sizes is kinda like comparing apples and oranges. I certainly agree with your point that the 25 gallon tank is insufficient for some peoples needs/wants. At least Ford finally made the improvement in fuel tank size(s) for the new model change. BTW - I'm averaging 14 to 15 mpg mixed driving in my 04 screw (5.4 with 3.73 LS), but it's only got 1200 miles on it.

BROTHERDAVE:

We owned a '95 Suburban 4x4, 6.2L (I think) Turbo Diesel, which had a 42gallon tank.

I think it got in the area of 18-20 MPG on average, with mixed highway/downtown driving.

But we had to take it every 18 or so months to get the fuel injector pump replaced (this was a common problem on the engine from what I gathered, and after the warranty expired this was a $1500+ job IIRC...). I dont think my dad will buy another chevy...not yet anyway. When we were looking at the '02 F250 he didnt even give the chevies much of a glance.

But it was nice having a 42 gal. tank...we could make it all the way to Colorado from Dallas on less than a tank.

edit: BTW we get about the same mileage with our 7.3L F250 as we did with the suburban but we lost alot of interior space (obviously, which is a very nice thing to have on those 9 hour drives).
