While personally I could care less about the posts, I do care about the people here. When this happened the first time, one of my favorite people on ths board, Cowlady nearly left. We hardly hear from her anymore and it is ashame. I just don't want to see the people leave that we have come to know.

Big deal, I'm back down to 165. I don't care, I just come to hang out and learn. This forum has gotten so big it's just to hard to read them all. But, I've been here everyday (sometimes several times a day) since Sep 98. Even while deployed overseas...

Why does everyone think that deleting old posts is going to free up the server ?

The busy message is the server saying it can't handle any more connections at the moment.

When the web guys clean, purge and re-index, it is mostly for disk space recovery and to speed up search functions...

Want to reduce the busy messages ? Maybe we should all chip in and help Steve get either a larger server, a higher speed Internet connection, or some of both...

I though I was low on the post count. I wasn't sure. So that's what they do, remove old posts? Hey, why not. There is a ton of stuff that is buried and much of it will never be viewed again.

One idea: remove the post count all together. Maybe then there would be less theads in our beloved Lightning section where just about every posts is one or two words or an emoticon.

I don't think the post count means diddily. It tells nothing about the quality of the information. I don't think it's neccessary

She's pretty serious about her post count... and I agree, it is ashame.

FWIW, we do not remove old posts when we run the server maintenance. The maintenance that was recently run re-counts the post you have made, taking into account the forum specific post count rules.
That sucks. I though it was supposed to "reduce" this problem?
I don't recall ever saying that this particular maintenance would fix the server busy problems. The overall goal of not counting posts in Gen Disc was to reduce the "post whoring" problem, where people post useless information simply for the purpose of increasing their post count. Ultimately, that would lead to less useless posts in the database, perhaps resulting in fewer "server busy" messages. The only thing that will completely "fix" the server busy messages at this point would be a server upgrade, something that may currently be in the works.

Browse back through some of my recent posts... you'll see that I'm a pretty helpful guy with generally 'long' posts now.

RP
I can vouch for that, except with a minor correction. Rather then “general long” post I would say RockPick is written some mini-novels, and very well written at that.

I agree with Steve to a point about some useless threads and post padding, but there are other forums with the same problem, maybe not with useless threads to begin with, but with a lot of padding after the threads are started, and some very popular forums as well…

I will say I did not think the post count thing would affect the “server busy” but it has been much better the past few days…

It's nice to see 01 and RP friends again

Seriously though, RP does have very informational posts, he's helped me before, and he's helper numerous other people.

And remember LFGJ, calling me names ain't going to help anything. Also, the webmaster lost a lot of posts as well!

EDIT: 01 knows his stuff also.
