I agree about "Walkin' in Memphis." Cohn writes some great tunes. Have you heard, "Silver Thunderbird?"
The remake I hate is Linda Ronstadt's/Terry Clark's version of Warren Zevon's, "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me." I acknowledge Ronstadt's version was a great cover, but no one did it better than Warren. I hate the way the chicks changed and ruined the last verse (Warren's original lyrics below):
"I met a girl at the Rainbow Bar,
She axed me if I'd beat her;
She took me back to the Hyatt House;
I don't wanna talk about it...."
Other good covers:
Tom Petty's Byrds tunes..."I'll feel a whole Lot Better," and The Searchers, "Needles and Pins(za)."

I agree with many of the 'bad' and 'good' ones mentioned so far.
Another good cover is Social Distortion's version of the Johnny Cash classic "Ring of Fire".
One cover I like better than the original is Lyle Lovett's verision of "Friend of the Devil" from the Grateful Dead tribute album "Deadicated".

If you wanna real shock (or laugh), listen to the old (syrupy) John Denver chestnut, "Take Me Home, Country Roads," by Jason and the Scorchers. Holy *****!

jaymz,
holy crap, a jason & the scorchers reference. i have the album with that cover on it. and as far as live records go that midnight roads & stages seen is an incredible album.
was that john denver cover on 'clear impeteus morning'. i know i have it, just cant place what cd its on.
saw them several years ago in new york city. was real up close and personal. one of the people i was with took a cigarette butt from warner hodges ashtray as a small momento of his guitar-playing hero.
still remember buying 'fervor' on vinyl. and being blown away by that album. thats some real good stuff.

I hate "Walking in Memphis" by LoneStar. The originaly was far better. I also hate the Dixie Chicks and everything they stand for.
The other one's are ok.
Here is one of the best covers I've ever heard. It is "Big Yellow Taxi" done by Counting Crows. IT was originally a hidden track on their last album but it was in the movie "Two weeks Notice" from last year. So they went back and added Vanessa Carlton backup lyrics and it became a pretty big hit for one of the most underrated bands ever. It is as good or better than the original Joni Mitchell version and way better than Amy Grant's version.
Other excellent Counting Crows covers.
"The Ghost in You" Psychedelic Furs (sp?)
"REturn of the Greivous Angel" Graham Parsons
some Oasis song called "Live forever" I think.
These are live covers they've done in concert.
"My sweet thing" by Van Morrison, they insert this in the middle of 'Round Here in concerts
"Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen, they insert this in the middle of "Rain King" in concerts.
Both of these covers are excellent, they do them very well.
I also saw Matchbox 20 do U2's "where the streets have no name" very good
And finally I saw Sugar Ray do a Rembrandts song, Sugar Ray can rock.

Not sure which Jason and the Scorchers album has "Country Roads." I love watching the looks on peoples' faces when they hear this one!
Another kinda "Country Punk" CD that's great is Ween's, "14 Country Hits," (or something like that). "Pi$$ up a Rope" us just hilarious!

I have to disagree with the Ataris- Boys of summer statement...
while Im not big on the "new school punk", the Ataris actually nailed that song really well...I couldnt even tell the diference until I heard him say "saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadilac" ..thats different of course

Just thought of another I realy like. Disturbed covered Shout (Tears for Fears). I think I liked Disturbed's version better, since they actually shout, and to me bring out what the song is all about.

The Atari's version of "boys of Summer" ROCKS! The first time I heard it I thought Henley re-recorded it with a little modification.
I prefer the original "Shout", Disturbed puts a little too much anger in it for me.
All readers should get a copy of "Me First and the Gimme Gimme's", they do great updated renditions of the classics we grew up listening to. They add some seriously needed muscle to the songs they repeat. I especially like "Raining On Prom Night".
