Question Question about 92 Jeep Grand Cherokee---->

My 16 year old sister is about to own a 92 Jeep Grand Cherokee that my parents are buying for her to drive. Its owned by my aunt so we know that it has been treated well and only has 95,xxx on it. Its a V-6 auto with all the options. Its also from Alabama, which means its never seen any salt or anything corossive.

Has anyone ever owned a Jeep? Any common probs with them? General info, other comments, etc?

Thanks

-Greeno

First, if its a 92, it doesn't have a V6, but has the inline 6 4.0l, which is one very stout motor. Lots of these buggers run forever with regular maintinence. The miles aren;t a problem for this motor. Probably one of the best purpose built engines , but it is a bit small for the Grand Cherokee (which is why they offered V8's.)

Short of that, I own an XJ (Cherokee) so I can't say much more about the Grand Cherokee other than the common motor. Not much else is the same, other than the 2 solid axle setup. Its a Jeep, should be good (though with the usual Jeep rattles and leaks - they are just marking their territory )

my brother got my grandma's 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo after she passed away and my grandpa went into the nursing home. we have not had any problems since she bought it in 94. it has the inline 6 but only has about 45,000 miles because my grandparents did not drive it much outside of town. Last year we had to replace the tranny, and this summer the water pump went out. Otherwise no problems.

Greeno, read the post by gopher again. I think what he said was it wasn't a V-6, but an inline (straight) 6 that was of 4 liter displacement.

I don't know if you have a problem with theft where you are but here the Jeep is the most stolen vehicle. It seems a lot of the 12 to 15 year year olds like to joy ride in them. They break off the ignition on the steering shaft and use a screw driver to start them. Consider an alarm system or the club.

The "Iron Duke" was the Pontiac designed 2.5L 4 cyl. It was used in Chevy S-10s and Celebrity's, Cutlass Cieras, 6000's and Centurys in the 80's and early 90's. It was also used in Jeep CJ's, Wranglers and Cherokees. It may even be the basis for the current Wrangler engine, I am not sure.

The Jeep 4.0 is the same as the 258ci six cylinder that was used in at least the early 70's in CJ's, Hornets, Gremlins and even the Pacer. My grandfather had a 73 Hornet that he got 168,000 miles out of before it died. Not bad for a Hornet.

Yeah, Charlotte only got a few years out of their Hornets.

Actually, the 4.0 was a completely new engine that was based off of the 2.5l Inline 4 cylinder, which was loosely based on some of the charecteristics of the old 258 (4.2l). Not the same engine, but share some of the same charecteristics. I'm pretty sure the Iron Duke pontiac 2.5l and the AMC/Jeep 2.5l are not the same motor. The 4.0l inline six made its debut in the 1987 model year Cherokee, and then eventually was also placed in the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler.

A good motor.

My sister has a 93 GC that has 130,000 miles on it now. They've owned it since 95 and as far as I know, the only things to go wrong with it were the air conditioning condensor went and the ABS was acting up. Not bad for almost 10 years of ownership and and putting 110,000 miles on it. It's still going strong.
