(Buffalo, NY, October 27, 2003 -AP) - - A 26-year-old man is in jail after police found his girlfriend's dismembered body scattered around their rundown house on the city's West side.
Neighbors say Michael Morgan tried to run after police went to the house looking for 33-year-old Susan Small, who hadn't been seen in weeks. Her brother chased him down.
Morgan was arraigned Sunday, accused of second-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Small.
"We're still piecing (the case) together," Erie County District Attorney Frank Clark said. "She'd been dead for a considerable period of time."
Initial speculation included a theory of cannibalism, but the prosecutor disagreed. "It appears what he was doing was dismembering the body in order to dispose of it," Clark said.
"We found the main torso in one room and parts of the body in a freezer and in the stove," Clark said. "I think he tried to dispose of some in the toilet unsuccessfully."
Small, the mother of two young children, had been missing for over three weeks. Police released a missing person's report Wednesday after Small's sister reported her disappearance. Her brother said he last spoke to her Oct. 3.
Investigators made the gruesome discovery shortly before noon Saturday when they went to the house looking for Small. Police said her relatives became suspicious when her children were left with Morgan at the house, which they said she never did. The relatives said Morgan refused to let them inside and told them he had no idea where Small was.
Neighbors said Monday they saw Small's brother chase down and catch Morgan when he tried to escape through the house's back door and onto a side street. The brother held Morgan down, yelling, "Where's my sister?" Police soon reached them.
Word of the killing unnerved neighbors in the working-class neighborhood.
"It's weird and crazy," said neighbor Michael Rivera, who said he had little contact with Morgan. "People that do something like this stay to themselves."
Another neighbor, George Carvjal, added, "It's scary for something to happen like this. I've got a family. Who wouldn't get worried?"
Morgan's mother lived in the house next door but has not been charged. One neighbor noticed that Morgan had recently put up a blue plastic tarp that covered the opening between the two houses.
Clark said the cause of death was believed to be strangulation. Police recovered tools that may have been used in the dismembering, including a hacksaw. They also removed a stove from the residence.
"I don't know why she was killed," said Clark. "It's just so grisly."
A felony hearing is scheduled Friday.
Small's children were staying with family members.
