I heard that from all the nuke testing (reason for the name area 51, the land was broken down into area's and named by number), the rad. would not be good to work in and messed up the computers and related equipment.

I think there was a lot more going on there.
They closed area 51 because Elvis moved in there with Marylin Monroe and JFK. It was just getting too crowded with all those Caddys and Big E's twinkie stash

Where do you think they get all the footage for movies like Star Wars? We're already out there. I mean, come on! Where do you think all the aliens came from in the movie "Men In Black?" People kill me sometimes.
Ha, you're joking, (I hope) but I had a conversation via CB with an OTR trucker several years ago who was trying to tell me all about how the movie about the Aircraft Carrier that goes back in time to 1941, Final Countdown I think it was, was a true story. And how the Federal Reserve was a private corporation and a whole bunch of conspiracy theory other stuff. I eventually pulled off the road so I didn't have to listen to him anymore. I thought he was joking for the first 10 minutes or so

Cool

You guys are too funny !!!!!!!!!

Regardless, the site is there and is probably still being used to this day. More cautiously but still being used. The governments have way too much **** that is secret these days and I would love for someone to open up a can on them and spill the beans.

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

I'm sure Saddam, Osama and any other potential adversaries would would like that too. Hmmmm, National Security, nah we don't need any of that. Let's just show the world our true capabilities, so they can build a plan to counter them. Yea, that's a good idea.

I didn't realize their was any debate if it exists - it does exist. I thought the debated centered on what they did at this base.

Way back when, the USGS sectioned off the western states by grid pattern and named the Areas 1, 2, 3, etc... The Dept of Defense came in, decided they liked this one 'Area' and moved the few people that were there out. The area they choose was Area 51. Not really and different than the Section, Township, and Range now used in most of the country to define property boundaries, except much larger.
