I saw the segment on this guy and his past experiences
and "brushes" with bears. It seems to me that this guy
obviously had a fascination with these animals, often
ignoring warnings from park officials and getting to
close to these animals. For someone who was so
smitten by these animals, he didn't show a lot of
respect for their power. It is a sad event for both his
and her families, but when you put yourself in a
dangerous position...bad things can happen. Any
hunter or nature lover should know that. Most of us
realize that responsiblity when we step in the great
outdoors. I may like hunting and have a bit of a
fascination with wildlife but that doesn't mean I'm
gonna do something to put me at risk or my friends at
risk.

Was the guy that has been on the Discovery Channel several times? Living with bears or something to that effect?

Yep, that's the guy.

Here's another story about it:

Screams of bear's 2 victims are on tape

Associated Press
October 10, 2003

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The graphic sounds of a deadly bear attack in the Alaska wilderness were captured on tape, revealing a wildlife author's final, frantic screams as he tried to fend off the beast, authorities said Wednesday.

His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, also died in the attack. She graduated from high school in Valparaiso, Ind.

Trooper Chris Hill said the tape suggests a video camera was turned on just before Timothy Treadwell was attacked at his campsite. Huguenard was later mauled to death by a bear. The recording is audio only, and the screen is blank for all six minutes.

"They're both screaming, she's telling him to play dead, then it changes to fighting back. He asks her to hit the bear," Hill said. "There's so much noise going on. I don't know what's him and what might be an animal.

"It's pretty disturbing. I keep hearing it in my mind."

The remains of Treadwell, 46, and Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, Calif., were found Monday at Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula. Treadwell was known for approaching, even touching, bears in the wild.

An air taxi pilot who arrived to pick up the couple contacted the National Park Service and troopers to report a brown bear was apparently sitting on top of human remains in the camp.

A ranger shot and killed a large brown bear when the animal charged at them through the dense brush. Troopers and rangers later killed a smaller bear apparently stalking them.

Hill said he was stunned by what he heard on the tape.

"The audio starts while he's being mauled and ends while he's being mauled," Hill said.

Treadwell may have heard a bear and asked Huguenard to turn on the camera, which was found with the lens cap on in a camera bag, Hill said.

Is this like an oxymoron:

He asks her to hit the bear

A treehugger being violent towards an animal (non human)? Bad treehugger!!! No more veggie burgers for you.

Some excerpts from an Anchorage Daily News article back in 2001...

"There was no mistaking Timothy Treadwell on the ''Late Show with David Letterman'' last Tuesday night (Feb. 20, 2001 and on re-runs).

He was the guy in the blue suit who looked like a shaggy-blond rock star and told viewers that the brown bears he lives with in Alaska are mainly harmless ''party animals'' out to have a good time.

Some party...my guess is that at least the bear had a good time.

When Letterman asked whether the bears might someday kill him, Treadwell said he feels safer living among Alaska's grizzlies than jogging through Central Park in New York City. Besides, he said, a fox yips a warning when bears come near his tent. "

Guess the fox was gone...

Treadwell, a self-taught bear expert from Malibu, Calif., has spent each of the past 12 summers living solo among Alaska's bears, mainly in Katmai National Park. He has given them names -- like Booble and Aunt Melissa -- and he's made it his mission, and living, to videotape bears close up and share his experiences. In the process, he has become one of Alaska's most controversial summer guests.
Despite misgivings, National Park Service officials have tolerated Treadwell, saying he has the potential to reach millions of people with his stunning footage of bears and his goofy though engaging television personality. But increasingly, park officials, bear biologists and other people have become concerned.
''At best he's misguided,'' said Deb Liggett, superintendent at Katmai and Lake Clark national parks. ''At worst he's dangerous. If Timothy models unsafe behavior, that ultimately puts bears and other visitors at risk.''
She worries that Treadwell might someday get mauled or killed by a bear. The park would have a tragedy on its hands and would probably have to destroy the bear.

Her worries materialized...but the park doesn't have a tragedy on it's hands...all it means is that one less idiot is roaming the planet.

Darwin award for sure...

damn, I was hoping to hear his final screams.......where as most people with common sense camping in bear territory would have a large caliber handgun going off in their tapings

I hear you there, this guy was just a "moron gone wild" I usually have my 12 gage shotgun with me. I know it may not stop a bear but it will hurt like a mother if he/she is shot in the face a few times, or at least 6, IF I get them all off before it gets to close...

Good thing this moron didn't have kids, or he may have told them it was ok to pet the big kitty in the wild...

Oh, for those wondering, that is ONE kitty I would not install as a speedbump, to much damage to the truck, if it can clear the front bumper then its fair game...
