The lottery is suppose to help fund the schools, so do your part and buy more lottery tickets! I am.

They need to get them lazy *** kids to have car washes after school, bake sales, and other money making activities.
Get them kids working and earning their keep.
Everyone just wants to rush home after school now and watch TV or play PS2, I see it with my neighbors kids.

When I was a kid in school and we were going on a field trip or whatever, we sold chocolate bars, and did many activities to help pay the extra expenses.
Not only did it raise money, but it gave us kids something to do, and put the responsibility on us to be responsible for any extra activities.
talk about self esteem builder, there's no better feeling than taking a class trip, and knowing your own hard work paid the fees.

Burt, I don't agree with how your child's school is doing it, as far as everyone paying the same whether they attend a special event or not.
Make the kids who are benefiting from the outing, make them ask their parents for the 5 bucks or whatever, on a per trip basis.
Sure, once in a while, some poor underprivileged kid wont be able to pay, so the school can cough it up as a courtesy to avoid any embarrassment.

From what I read, they don't have any legal recourse to make you pay, they are just trying to guilt you into paying.
Maybe they should have solicited a few suggestions from the parents themselves before deciding what to do.
Empower the parents and all that stuff.

I agree with you Habibi, man glad to know you’re a conservative, at least at heart…

Yes, if kids want to do things that cost money then they should do things to earn the money, bake sales or what have you or have that kids parents cough up the cash like I did for my daughter’s sports.

See there is a problem with “telling” the kids to go out and earn money, again its that liberals mindset with the homeless ”How dare you tell that homeless person to go work to earn money, just give him/her the money and stop being so mean” Ya, what ever let him/her starve when they hungry enough they WILL work…

Then there is the ”You can’t tell the children to work, that’s just wrong, it’s cruel, it’s mean” Ya, what ever then little Johnny can sit and play in the dirt for his after school activity…

Anyhow they won’t guilt me into anything. You see its not in my system, not a part of my make up, I am not liberal so I don’t "Feel their pain”

I think that our schools are being controlled by something far worse than liberals....

SOCIALISTS!!!!!!!

My biggest issue is that generally teachers (or holy men in the case of religious schools) control the purse strings. I will give this group the respect for their knowledge, intelligence, education...

but don't for a second believe that these people actually know how to deal with large amounts of money.

Maybe this situation that affects ALL school boards across North America would not be so dire if some proper money managers were hired.

With the pay these trustees and board directors make, it shouldn't be hard to find a private sector accountant/banker to take the helm.

If only they would open up the doors on that "old boys club"

J-150:

Excellent post and I couldn’t agree more. Public schools need to be run like a business. You are right there are a lot of socialist liberals running the public school system who need to be thrown out into the street and made “homeless”…

We, as in the federal and state governments spend WAY too much money on public education. The more we spend the more stupid kids become. It is unjust how these socialist liberals treat our children and more people should be up in arms on this child abuse that goes on every day in our public school systems…

Where are the liberals on this issue? Why are they not out their fighting for ”the children” why do they continue to hold ”the children” back from advancing and having a fair shot at life?

It is time for school vouchers in order to ”support the children” of America, to afford them the opportunities that many of us had, at a good wholesome education. Our children need to know math, science, history (real history, not that rewritten by socialist liberals) government, (their own government and how it REALLY works) and physical education, sports where there are LOSER’S just like in real life. When they cry because they are losers is when they learn how to get back up on their feet and move forward, just like in real life.

It is time to let little Betty knows she is the brightest student with an A and that little Johnny is a stupid little moron with an F. Only then will little Johnny get the help that he needs. That is helping and nurturing ”the children”.

Public school teachers have nothing to fear but fear it self. If they are indeed bright, of which the vast majority are, they will find good and better paying jobs in private schools ran like a business. The public teachers that get left behind, well so sorry, but you don’t make the grade, find another job and McDonalds is hiring…

If people really care about ”the children” they will disassembly this ”Old Boy’s and Old Girl’s Club” known as the Major Democratic Fund Raising Organization, or in short “union”.

Those who really want to support ”the children” will back school vouchers, those that don’t will let little Johnny get left behind…

again, the solution is nothing more than a band-aid. Throw more money at the overspending. And then keep overspending and keep getting more money. A vicious snowball.

And to your point 01, stop with the touchy/feely approach to schooling.

Let little Johnny and his parents know that he is as dumb as a post and is bound to work at Subway as a career when he gets older. Only then will Little Johnny and his parents get the message that its time to crack down if Little Johnny is to stay out of jail later in life.

For a profession where 100% of its members have at least a baccalaureate, if not a Masters degree, why are they so ignorant?

My schools activity fee is only $10. IF it were $50 per student the school would be making nearly $95,000 of the student alone

They've got 1900 students at your school?

I wouldn't stand for it! I would go to the School Board and demand that every year they let some of you graduate!

If you have 2 schools in town, and your school had 2100 kids, wouldn't there be 2102 schools in your town?

I work in a public school district with about 700 kids in my
particular school. We don't have any fees that you have
described. If money is needed for band programs or for
the football team, the kids get out and hawk some type of
merchandise to raise the money.

Thumbs up

My kid goes to Liberal High, they are able to keep the fees low because the fees are shared with schools in other districts. I have heard grumblings from the parents over at Limbaugh High and the fees have doubled at Bill O'Reilly High out in the suburbs.

I swear I don't know where they get the names for these schools although I suspect someone had some inside information when they came up with the name 'Limbaugh High'.

I wasn't going to chime in but....

I'm upset as well waterrat. My property tax bill has a line item for the school district that is over $2500 (not $4300 but big enough), my problem is that I don't have any children. Add to that over $1000 to a public hospital district my Dr. isn't part of, $500 canal and waterways (don't own a boat) etc, etc. I personally receive a direct benefit (Police/Fire/Streets) from less than 20% of my total payment.

let's just say that after writing numerous checks to my son's school since the beginning of the school year.
i asked him if it would be alright if i wrote the next check out to.

MO' MONEY MIDDLE SCHOOL

they certainly seem to fit this description. i don't mind the fees as much as i mind sending checks to school 2-3 times a week. tell me how much you want and get it over with.
