Angry Why does my truck smell like shrimp?

For about a week now, my F150 has been smelling HORRIBLE on the inside. It has been getting progressively worse. It really gets bad when I turn on my air condition, but I don't know if this is simply letting in the scent from under the hood, or if the air condition is in fact the problem.
A lot of fog comes out of the vents, and the smell, as odd as it sounds, has a scent of old shrimp and syrup. If anyone has a clue what might be causing this, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I am about to go on a trip, and I just want to make sure that I am not going to be damaging something. Thanks.

No problem, the solution is to STOP giving your mother-in-law rides in your truck...

Unhappy Ok, Ok. Any REAL answers?

Alright, I guess I kind of set myself up for some jokes, but I could really use some serious answers. Thanks.

First, welcome to the board. Looks like you met a couple of us already. Saturday night is perhaps not the best night to look for a serious answer.

"and the smell, as odd as it sounds, has a scent of old shrimp and syrup."

Bein' a Chicago guy that isn't too common around here.

One thing that helps is to leave the AC control in the floor position when truck is shut off. That allows air to circulate.

You may have a mold problem problem also. They do make stuff to take care of that but I've not used any.

Another possiblity is a clogged drain hose for the AC.

I'm going to pass on making a joke and mirror what litnfast mentioned...

You might check around to see if you can come up with something dead in or around your cab. Not sure man..

Sounds to me like you've been punk'd

or in other terms someone pulled a prank on you.

My friend did something like that once.
He put fresh meat (I think salmon) underneath the backseat of my other friend's car.........boy did that stink for a few weeks.

However I have heard of instances where old food has been placed in the vents of a car. Very hard to get out unless you have a clotheshanger, or you might have to disassemble the dashboard.

If by chance it was a prank and you find out who it was...........I suggest stickering.

Buy lots and lots and lots of gay sex related bumperstickers and plaster them ALL over his car. Then to make it more fun smear lots of dog **** over his exhaust system.

Smile Problem solved, for now...

I think I have solved the problem, at least for now. I used a A/C deodering fogger that you place under the internal air intake. So far, it appears to be working. Thanks for all of the help, and the humor. This is a really great forum. Thanks again!

Just to be serious for a moment, are you sure that you aren't masking a problem by using the deoderiser?
You could have a leak from your heater matrix which would cause the smell.
Most glycol based anti-freeze has a kind of sickly sweet aroma.
Pull the covers and check it out.

I had this happen when my truck was fairly new and some research found that the problem was leaving the ac/vent control on MAX AC while parked which does not allow any circulation through the system therefore building some mold which does certainly stink. The smell can be quite significant and if you happen to leave it parked for several hours that way, it can get very strong and will take several days to finally get out of the system............

I just leave the switch in any position except ac/ max ac and I've never had the smell again in 5 years..........
