I vote they round up all the punks and send an invitation to those they ripped off to come out perform a televised beating on the thiefs. Hell, even if it's pay-per-view I'd pay to watch scammers get a good punishment.

From: Michigan Rocks and then some too!!!
a person posted this on another board:
"I received the following email. I'm thinking it is bogus because I have an item already listed that was listed before I received this and am able to sign in. The email states I can't bid or place items for auction until I reset my password. To check this I signed in using the same password I always have used and bid on a stupid telephone I hope I do not win. Fortunately the bid was one cent and that was my maximum bid."
In order to protect the security of your eBay account, we have reset your
password and secret question. This action was taken because your password may
have been compromised.

We cannot disclose the investigative procedures that led to this conclusion, but
please know that we acted in your best interest. We appreciate your cooperation
in working with us to protect your account by taking the following steps.

Since your password was reset, you will need to create a new password by
following the instructions provided below. Until you complete this process, you
will not be able to bid on or list an item.

1. Click on the "site map" link at the top of most eBay pages.
2. Click on the “I forgot my password” link located in the middle column under
the “Services” heading.
3. Follow the listed directions until you have successfully changed your
password. DO NOT use the same password you used previously.
4. After you enter your User ID on the “Forgot your password” page, you may be
asked your “secret question.” If you do not have the correct answer to your
secret question or if your secret question was reset, click on the “Send me
password instructions” link below the “Continue” button on the “Your Secret
Question” page to begin creating a new password.

IMPORTANT: In addition to changing the password on your eBay account, please
change the password on your personal email account. If your old eBay password
was also the password for any other online account you use (PayPal, etc.), we
recommend that you immediately change those passwords as well. To maintain
password security, each one of your online accounts should have a different
password. Even a slight difference (one letter or number) offers substantial
protection.

Taking these steps will ensure you are the only one that has access to your
account. Also, please remember the following guidelines when it comes to
password security:

1. Be wary of emails appearing to be from eBay that include links to pages that
require you to sign in, as these are often attempts to collect your password
information. Make sure that the Web site you are directed to is a part of the
eBay site. Please note this email does not provide a link, but asks that you go
directly to eBay. Always make sure that you're on an eBay page before giving out
your eBay password or credit card information. The best way to ensure that you
are on the eBay site is to type www.ebay.com into the Web address window of your
browser.

2. Make sure your password is difficult to guess, and uses a combination of
letters and numbers.

3. Don't use the same password on eBay that you use on your email account, or on
other Web sites.

If you need help with this situation, please reply directly to this email.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience in this matter.

Regards,

Customer Support (Trust and Safety Department)
eBay Inc
Now the email looks legit, so what could be wrong with this?
I'll tell you. The key here is that the guy says he can log in.

If you get this email, change your email's password first, then change your ebay password by typing in "ebay.com" and logging in. DO NOT use the "forgotten password" feature to reset your password unless 1) You did forget your password, and 2) You did NOT get an email telling you to reset it.

Most sites (probaby eBay included) record IP's of who "forgets" their password, so a hacker with your email PW would rather you request a new one, not to mention if you get an email saying "Here is your lost password" and you didn't request it, you'd know something is up.

I had the same email... I was just smart enough not to respond. Ebay will never ask for passwords and such via email. If it seems suspecious, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS contact the company to check it out. One stupid mistake can cost you either a bunch of cash or your identity or both...

I received this one

This is one I received from eBay ... It had eBay logos all over the e-mail. I do not know if it was legit or not. I plan on never purchasing anything through eBay again, so I did not click on the link. I have found when purchasing something through eBay it was more of a pain than it was worth. I also received one from PayPal stating my account was deactivated because it was an e-mail address (I already closed that account two years before I received the e-mail).

Dear eBay user,
During our regular update and verification of the accounts, we were not able to verify your current
account information, either your information has changed or it is incomplete. Please update and verify
your information by filling out the verification form. If the account information is not updated
within 5 days then your access to bid and buy on eBay will be restricted.
Click on the link below to complete the verification:

*** PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL ***

Thank you

A friend of mine got ripped for 1200 on ebay. Somebody used a bogus email like that to hikack a good users account, then he asked him to buy something similar for less outside of ebay.

Cool

I received 2 of the e-mails listed earlier - one about my account expiring in 5 days and another about needing to verify my personal info.

If you forward the e-mails, completely intact and un-edited, to spoof@ebay.com, they will:

1. Acknowledge receipt of your e-mail

2. Follow up with you as to the authenticity of the e-mail.

As RockPick said, they will NEVER ask you for personal info, login names and passwords, etc.

Also, remember to look for the little lock icon in your taskbar to ensure you are on a secure page when doing any transaction-related business or password changes, etc.
