Well, Habibi, the reason that a lot of doctors won't prescribe strong painkliiers is because of the people who do abuse them. They are afraid that they will prescribe some pills and that person will overdose or sell the pills, and they don't want to be the first person responsible for that.

Don't do it
I worked as a pharmacy tech for 26 years. I am qualified to prepare any sterile solution including antibiotics, chemo's & controlled substance drips. I'm pointing this out as my way of illustrating that I know what I'm talking about.
I have seen MANY people w/a serious need for a potent painkiller - cancer patients, post op cases, people with severe debilitating diseases. They started out looking for relief & ended up hopelessly addicted.
Some resorted to forging RX's, others thought they could simply have different doc's write new RX's & fill them. What they didn't know was their insurance company tracked all meds & would reject the claim stating it was just filled at another pharmacy. Can you say busted? They could!
I saw people pay others to try to get a prescription written so they could then buy the meds off their friends. Some made up countless excuses as to why they needed them earlier & earlier & we tracked that too. They would be denied by state pharmacy laws - every state has them.
None of these people had a drug problem when they 1st started taking these drugs. Over time they became hooked & some died w/o ever beating that addiction. What a tragic way to die!
I would not take any of these drugs & actually feel fortunate that I am severely allergic to most. I discovered this when hospitalized for ruptured discs in my back. Now I claim an allergy to ALL narcotics/opiates/opiods - I'd rather be in some pain than to end up with a lifetime addiction. I know my pain will resolve over time - an addiction is not so easy to get rid of - I've seen it happen to good people - over & over & over.
I don't mean to preach but if I can stop even 1 person from falling into this trap & destroying their life then I have to try.
Thanks for reading this - hope it makes some sense.

Fact is, the doctor has a responsibility to find a balance between easing their patients suffering, and trying to protect them from becoming addicts.
All I'm saying is that many doctors go too far with their effort to "protect us" that they lose sight of the fact their patients are in pain.
I've been getting scripts for T-4's for 5 years, my doctor doesn't give me grief over it, if he did, I would find myself a new doctor.
I take them "as required", and sometimes I won't need one for 3 months, other time I will take 2 a day for a week, it all depends on several factors.
Something people forget, it's also the patients responsibility not to get 'hooked" on their medication.
If I abuse my meds, and all of a sudden develop a dependency, then that's my fault and not my doctors.
So as much as some doctors go too far by trying to "protect" us, they also should know that a big part of responsibility lies with the patient, and they shouldn't treat us like children.
My wife is a good example, she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, her doctor is a total twit (IMHO) regardless of how often she complains about the pain, the doctor will not give her adequate medication to deal with the pain.
So what happens? She takes my T-4's when her pain is severe.
This isn't how it should be, she should get her own prescription, and not have to resort to "cheating" just to deal with a problem that should be understood by her doctor.
I've been encouraging her to find a new doctor, and hopefully one day she will.
Habibi
Habibi, serotta, you're absolutely right, that is not the way it should be, but that is exactly what it is. The region I live in is the worst region in the country for prescription drug abuse (per capita), and even people that need it are hard pressed for any prescription around here. My best friend is dying, he has a rare disease that crashes his platelets in his blood, and the only remedy for that is a drug that causes him to lose all of the calcium out of his body, so it's a lose-lose situation. He now has the skeletal structure of a 98 year old woman (he's 26), and he has about 4 vertebrae that are disentegrating, and he gets 6 Lortabs per month. I watch the man cry on a regular basis because his pain, and his doctor says "People your age abuse drugs, I can't prescribe you anything." That wouldn't be so bad, but it's the 13th doctor he has seen, and he has NEVER been able to get pain medication, and he doesn't abuse drugs, he doesn't do anything illegaly, and he needs some medication, but he can't get anything, and he had to go all the way to UVA medical center to get his Lortabs prescribed. It's a bunch of bs, I know, but that really is the reason that doctors won't prescribe pain medication to some people. I have had a lot of friends die because of prescription drugs, and I'll probably lose more close friends and relationships (Jamie, Jessica, etc...) over prescription drugs, and I'll always support my friends to kick their habits of drug abuse, but people who need the drugs NEED THE DRUGS. It isn't for a doctor to decide what someone in pain will do when they get their prescription or try to second guess someone's intentions, if the man is in pain, give the man (or woman) some pain medicine. That's what it's for. Sorry if I sounded like I was supporting the doctors who don't prescribe, I really think that they should have to live through the pain sometime, then they'd understand why people who are hurting shouldn't have to get a hassle with them, too. As anything, you'll always have people who abuse it, but like Cowlady said, there's ways to track the drugs and see, and the people who need it shouldn't be punished because of the actions of people who abuse it. My $.02.

Sorry about your young friend who has a ***** doctor, I wish there was an easy answer.
His doctor surprises me because 99% of the time when a patient is terminal, all a doctor can do is concentrate on pain management, and try to improve quality of life, i mean what else is there?
Why should he care if your friend get's hooked? Good grief.
My doctor is cool, I can go on a magic carpet ride anytime I want, but I don't abuse it, and he understands this.
Habibi
Ya gotta wonder why someone would be posting this here. Those drugs are illegal to posses unless prescribed by a doc and I would hope there are no drug sales going on through this forum....

A doctor gave me a Percocet perscription about six months ago. I still have some of the pills left but, the only time I take one is after 01 XLT Sport has expressed a political viewpoint.
