Degrees???

im currently enrolled at WVU, and on my way to becoming a Mechanical Engineering Major. was just curious if anyone on this board is an Engineering Major of any kind and what type of job you got. Im just trying to see what some of my options might be out of college. And ill have a lightning by then so i figured i would ask on this board because you guys obviously have the same GREAT taste in vehicles.

Thanks

BSME from NJIT. Realized money $ux in ME field, so I moved, and now am a System Support Engineer supporting 56 offices. I support network, servers and clients for a large credit card company.

Unless you co-op before you get out, getting a good job to start is HARD in the ME field...

Good luck!

Sean,

I have an associate’s degree in Architectural Engineering with a Major in Facilities Planning & Management from WIT in Boston. I graduated in 2000 and currently work for a General Contractor in Boston doing project management. With an engineering degree I would recommend you take a look at the construction industry. Construction is one of the highest paying fields as well as being a field in which there is always a demand for good people. I kind of fell into construction and have never looked back.

Cool

Been visiting the site for the past year. Finally got registered.
I got my Lightning just over a 1 year ago, 3 months after graduation and two months after my first day on the job.

I hold a EE degree from Cal Poly and have logged on just over 14k MILES on my 2002 True Blue L.

Can't go wrong with a EE degree right now.

Like the first gentlemen said, if you can co-op that helps get your foot in the door of the big three. We have co-op. students in 3 times a year and I think the make pretty good money also. The two students I had in my department are now full fledge mechanical engineers now and working for us.

I transfered in my senior year from electrical because the job field was tough. Then by the time I graduated the civil field was tough.............go figure.

i saw one of your post's before about how much you made a year, very well too. i would love to come work for you or a company like yours. what exactly do the kids do that got jobs at your company. Plus i would probably get some brownie points for driving the same truck as the boss....

Ford Lariat, UofM D is a great place for getting into automotive and reasonably priced, although out of state tuition is considerably more.

I saw this thread yesterday afternoon and wondered how long it would last in the Lightning Forum.

A number of folks have hit the high points, but here's a few more.

"Engineering" covers a lot of ground. What area are you interested in? Some branches pay better than others, some are almost impossible to get into, many are localized around the area they are applied (auto design etc)

One other point is that employers who actually need engineers (and there are fewer and fewer of them thanks to the fact that the number of American companies that actually make something drops every year) are very picky. I know for a fact that large companies are very aware of which schools turn out people with the skills they want. I had a discussion with an engineer from a Fortune 100 company a while back and he said that they only considered applicants with degrees from X, Y, and as a last resort Z. All others need not apply.

Just my .02

FonMan A.A.S.E B.S.M.E and considering finishing a M.S.E.E

Hey. I'm a Mechanical Engineer. I first started in Tool and Die. Then I got tired of that and got my degree. As I was going to school, I changed jobs to a Mechanical Designer (working towards my field) at a Government Contracting company. I held a top secret security clearance. Then I got my degree. I then came to Louisville and I work at GE appliances. My previous job was tons funner, but GE doubled my salary so I came here. I work with co-opts and interns. Either one would be desirable if you can do it - gets your foot in the door. Good luck

I dont but I have a couple of buddies that went that route.

One guy in particular worked for a tier 2 auto supplier out of Eng school. Starter job.

Now he's been at an aircraft manufactuer for a number of years making more money than he knows what to do with.

All of the other guys are actually doing process engineering in manufacturing facilities... also making obscene money.

Now these jobs are with baccalaureate in Engineering. Once they get thier P.Eng and Consulting Engineer designations they'll make twice as much with half the work.

Lots of jobs and none of them posted so there has to be quite the resume campaign.
