Warren Zevon: RIP

Last Sunday, September 7th, singer-songwriter Warren Zevon passed away at age 56, a victim of terminal Lung cancer. Originally given only 3 months to live, he managed to survive over a year and complete a final album, "The Wind," released on August 26th.

To those of you who were fans of Warren's music, we know his passing will be a true loss to Rock and Roll: we will miss all his bent, wigged out, tormented characters, his humor, honesty, great melodies and lyrics.

To those of you who are not fans, and perhaps only know of him from hearing "Werewolves of London," you are truly missing some of the best music ever made. From decapitated, zombie- mercenaries ("Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner") to some of the most gorgeous, sensitive ballads ever written ("Accidentally, LIke a Martyr"), Warren Zevon entertained me for over three decades. Now, he's gone.

VH1 is airing a special on it's "InsideOut" show, covering the making of Warren's last album: it's quite remarkable and may give you an insight into both his music and his last days. The artists who just "showed up" to play on his last Cd included Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham, several of The Eagles, David Lindley, Billy-Bob Thornton, and Bruce Springsteen. Add in all the others who have played on his albums over the years...Stevie Nicks, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Bob Dylan, Don Henley, Neil Young, Brian Setzer, Jennifer Warnes, Phil Everly, Bonnie Rait, Glen Frey, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Graham Nash, Chick Corea...and you get some idea of the high regard in which he was held in by his contempories. In addition, David Letterman recently devoted an entire show to him, with Warren as his only guest.

Wherever you are, Warren, thanks for the music: it meant a lot to me. I'll miss you.

jaymz,

One of the best concerts I have ever been to was in a little place in Nashville, 328 Performance Hall, and it was classic Warren Zevon. The tunes were great and so was he. He will be missed by many.

hikerrich:

He seemed to like the small venues the best; I think he took a lot of energy from the crowds in small, rowdy watering holes.

Probably my favorite live album of all time is his "Stand in the Fire," with an absolutely kick-a$$ bar band and some hilarious lyric changes in "Werewolves." Unfortunately, the album is out of print and has never been on CD. Perhaps Rhino will see fit to re-release it now that he's gone.

Lifegardjoe: You be missing some awesome tunes.
