Need help with 95 Mustang

Well its my mom's car. It is a 95 Mustang GT 5.0. We don't know what is wrong with it, but it will not crank. When the clutch is pressed and the key is turned, it does absolutely nothing. Not even a sound. It doesn't even try to crank. I know sometimes when a car will not crank, it will make a clicking noise but it doesn't even do that. All of the other power stuff works like the power windows and the locks. The radio comes on like it always does but it does nothing when the key is turned. She hasn't been able to drive it since like last Thursday and she really needs to get it running again.

Any suggestions??

Did you try to jump it? Enough juice to run the radio is not nearly enough to turn the starter. Battery may be shot.

maybe the starter needs replacement if not the battery. Last time that happened to me it was the starter.

If it is the battery there will normally be a clicking noise without even cranking on it. (this happened to me last friday) Jump it, if it turns over then replace the battery. Also for good measure check the battery connections, clean if needed with Arm and hammer and a little water.

If that doesn't do anything I would think starter or solinoid (sp?)

Locate the solenoid for the starter (fender well, or firewall), try jumping it with a screwdriver, if nothing try this,.........

Have someone hold the key in the start position, with the brake set and clutch depressed, hit the starter with a hammer. If it spins, look into replacing it soon.

Paul,
It could be;
* a bad starter relay...short across it

* a rusted starter relay mounting screw...make sure they are tight

* lose or dirty connections...check em all the way down to the starter, including the engine ground strap

* a bad neutral safety switch...while holding the key in the start position, jiggle the shifter in park and then in neutral

* a bad ignition switch...does she have a very heavy key chain? That can cause em to go bad. Wiggle the key while trying to start it.

* if its a stick shift, the clutch interlock switch could be bad.

* bad solinoid wire...sometimes the pigtail on the little wire that is on the starter solinoid gets corroded.

Good luck.

I think MROLDV8 is closest, I think it's the sensor that lets the car start when the clutch is pressed and keeps it from starting when it is not. The sensor has gone bad and is never saying that the clutch is pressed, so the car won't start.

Yeah, check the clutch sensor, that's what it sounds like to me too.

Just give her a push down the driveway and have her pop the clutch, works for me all the time when I run my battery down at the track.

Funny you mention the clutch sensor. I had a car in 1990 that had a kill-switch clutch postion interlock (whatever it's called). One day I went to start it and nothing happened. I almost had the wife take me to work when I noticed that the floormat had slid up enough to prevent the switch from working properly.

Sounds stupid, but I almost had it towed to the dealer.

I had something very very similiar happen with my 5.0, believe it or not, I wire brushed the heck out of the terminals, and it started right up; so the next day, I bought some new ones. You'd think it wouldn't go out all at once, but it did.

If not the battery, then check the ground cable to the block. Common problem.

The car won't jump start, but they said that it will push start and crank. And they said that they had already checked out the clutch sensor and put new battery cables on it. The battery is not even 2 years old

It is just wierd what it is doing. Like I mentioned before, the key just turns and it doesn't do anything, it doesnt even make a sound. All of the power stuff still works fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and keep them coming.

could be a long shot but how about the ignition switch? If it will push start but jump off, power works but doesn't crank over....that seems possible at least

I'd suggest going over to the corral in the general tech forum at:

http://www.corral.net/forums/forumdi...hp?forumid=290

There's about 10,000 Mustang freaks on there daily. They should be able to give you a few things to look at.
