Actually, no. He had always maintained that he could do it. We kept telling him he couldn't quit. One day, he and some co-workers all quit. he was the only one that stuck with it. After a short time of not smoking, I remember him saying that he had never know what food really tasted like. He could not believe how much smoking killed the taste.

Who would have thought bringing back a 6 or 7 year old thread about Smoking would had such a big debate about it! :o

even after all of the smoking, he was still able to quit. Thats the important thing. Good for him. Its not an easy thing to do.

It's interesting that you would write:

because you seem to be creating pro and con arguments in your own head and putting words into people's mouths (so to speak as this is all written) to have your own debate.

Never once did I claim second hand smoke is as "fatal/harmful" as direct smoke. I said it was harmful but never did I discuss degrees of toxicity/harmfulness/ whatever you want to term it.

I also never called YOU stupid. You seem to take these things personally.

However, you are inconsistent.

In post 117 you wrote:

Then in post 146 you write:

which implies second-hand smoke is fatal, and you wrote:

So it can kill, according to you, it's just not as fatal.

You slam us with an all CAPS statement that includes 6 exclamation points, wanting to make it clear to us that "SECOND HAND SMOKE IS HARMLESS", and then you say it's fatal, but not as fatal.

Is that anything like in the Princess Bride where the guy is only "mostly dead"?

People are not refusing to consider your opinion because you don't have a consistent one yet.

Make up your mind and then we'll debate.

can't stand the smell of cigarette or cigar smoke. My Dad smoked from the time he was 13 till he was 35. At the age of 35, he was smoking 3 packs a day and quit cold turkey. His nasty habit influenced me not to even want to try it. My wife is allergic to the smoke and goes in to coughing convulsions, so we avoid it totally.
Me too. My throat actually will close up like an allergic reaction. I have to force myself to breath. My Dad smoked for over 35 years and quite cold turkey. My Mom was in her 70's when she quite. Only after a battle with throat cancer. She had to use the patch.

okay Kobi...

you claim I am all over the map... but each of those is a repsonse to a separate question. Each is basically a half-thought.

Lets put them all together, apparently you can't.

Ambient second hand smoke is harmless as the body can filter it out. This is due to the low concentration of toxins present in second hand smoke and how much of it actually enters your body. The anti-smoking lobby implies that second hand smoke is as fatal as direct smoke. It is not.

If you were to breathe second hand smoke exclusively through scuba gear, as you suggested Kobi, then of course it can be fatal.

I started smoking @ 18 years old. I've always been a 1/2 pack/day guy. In 1993 I quit and used the savings foa a downpayment to buy a new Harley-Davidson. Then I went to Cuba, bought some cigars and hae been back to 1/2 pack/day since 2002. I'm trying again, but it's defintely more difficult this time. For the last 6 months, I've only smoked OP's (other peoples') at the rate of about 3 or so a week. Does that count as quiting?
I don't like the smell of cigarettes, but I thoroughly enjoy smoking a class cigar more than anything.
BTW, I do buy a pack once in a while to repay those I have 'borrowed'. I don't buy a pack for myself because I know I would smoke it up in 2 days.
