Are you traveling to Canada?
Use a credit card for everything you can.
Do not take a large sum of US currency with you.
Do not bring back any Canadian currency.
Use a ATM in Canada to get the small amount of Canadian currency you need in your pocket.
It's as simple as that.
Your credit card company and your bank/credit union will give you the best possible exchange rate.

We just made a purchase on Credit Card and wanted to figure how much U.S. $$. Receipt said, amount was in Canadian $$$$.
