Rustic Road

I know for most F-150 owners on this site the perfect drive is 1/4 mile long. For me the prefect drive is down a lightly traveled, local access country road with natural features, and a max speed of 45 mph.

Wisconsin has a Rustic Road Travel Guide that lists these roads. I'm thinking about taking a trip around the state just to take a drive down these roads.

Has anyone else done this?

Take a ride down to North Carolina and drive down "The Tail of the Dragon." That is the best road in the world. Make sure you go alone and not with the family because they might find it a bit scary. I know my friends did. I have to say a Mustang GT can hold its on on the twisties though

The Blue Ridge Parkway is close by, use it for those leisurely drives, plenty of side roads for the 4X4's.

I found that site after gasguzzler007's first post. One of the trips I've been thinking about is to the North Carolina seashore. That trip just got moved to the top of the list with a little Dragon Tail on the return.

I used to drive a semi and the pictures of the trucks on that site brings back memories. I ended up on some miserable roads trying to do the shortest A to B route thing.

01sport, The Outer Banks (Nagshead area) of North Carolina are over 600 miles from the Dragon's Tail. You better plan on a long vacation. There are some beautiful roads between the two, but there are some real *****ty roads too!

serotta,

I've got two weeks coming in September so time isn't a problem.

I also need to finish the Blue Ridge Parkway. I drove it some years ago but the section leading into Great Smoky was closed. I want to be able to say I drove the *whole* thing.

01sport, I did the same thing a few years ago on a bicycle, and the same thing happened, a section was closed. I had to detour around on Hwy 19. One of these days I'll finish it. That same year I rode the same bike from Murphy to Nagshead in 4 days (602 miles). If you think it's pretty from a truck, you should see it in slow motion from a bicycle.

I used to travel the Rustic Road sytem extensively when I lived in Wisconsin. I enjoyed them the most during the Fall.

Take the Great Lakes Circle Tour, it's a beautiful trip along the shorelines. When you get on the Canadian side of Superior have Alex buy you a beer.

My vote goes to the Road to Hana, in Maui, Hawaii. The road is only about 30 miles long, and travel along the coast of the island. There are pull offs to view beautiful waterfalls, natural pools, and beaches - and to get out of my way! There are something like 52 one-lane brdiges and 360 hairpin corners

I survived the dragon!

It would have been more fun if I'd been driving something other than the rental Taurus though. I must have picked a good time to drive it because I only got in the way of 1 biker.

State route 28 leading into the dragon and US 64 from Franklin to Highlands were fun too.

The Cherohala Skyway was quite the scenic drive.
