I don't get it

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/08/03/gay...ote/index.html

I'm all for everyone being treated equal, regardless of who/what/etc. they are. But this has me puzzled:confused:

A gay man trying to become a priest? Every religion that I am familiar with shuns the gay lifestyle, so wouldn't a gay priest be a huge double standard, turning people away from the church?

Although the better question would be, with the amount of double standards flying around the country why am I some what surprised about this

PS - Steve we could use a politics forum for all these rants.

Gay priest is what got the church into the big mess it is in now...

The guy needs to pull his head out of his butt and THINK as well as READ, as far as God is concerned he does NOT belong running a church or going to a church since he is gay. Gay is wrong and it is SICK...

Everything is life is NOT equal and NOT fair why do people NOT understand that? There will be or should never be any girls in boyscouts, nor should there every be any boys in girlscouts, same for gay people you do NOT belong running a church or anywhere near our children.

It is like that STUPID school they started or are going to start in New York a school for all gay kids WTF is with that? The whinners are upset because they get picked on in school, SO WHAT, many kids get picked on in school. All they have to do is SHUT their mouth about how they like sex with the same sex. Why is that a problem, same for the people in the work force, why is it when someone is gay they want EVERYONE to know about it?

I think it is wrong for them to tell everyone how gay they are just as it is wrong for some guy to be talking about how many women he did the past weekend. Should be simple make it a rule to SHUT UP about your sex life at work. If you want to be gay, then great keep your ass in the closet where it belongs, because I don't want my kid to see that SICK behavior...

Hell, while I am at it here is what I think about gay marriage, NO it should NEVER be allowed. Marriage is between a man and a wife, why? Dooh, because it takes a mommy and a daddy to make a baby...

That is a family...

Huh? I don't follow that one.

The only problem I have with that school is that they are going to be state funded. If it was a private school, let them do whatever they want. But because you have a different sexual preference does not mean you get to waste taxpayers money by going to special (read keeping segregation alive).

Though I have to say it's going to be really funny when they graduate their sheltered lives at that school and hit the real world, talk about in for a shock.

01 and Habibi - don't confuse gays with childmolestors

I'm not even going to get into the right and wrong aspects of being gay.
I thought that being a priest in the church required a vow of celibacy, so if this guy is openly gay, does that mean this vow doesn't apply to him?

Seems to me it's about time the church get out of the stone age, and get rid of this vow altogether.
Burt, I'm reading between the lines of your post, and I am assuming you don't think being gay is right, lol
J/k buddy, hey, a long time ago, I was the worst homophobic there ever was, but my attitude has changed in the last 10 years or so.
Personally I don't care if someone is gay, doesn't bother me, but don't ask for special treatment because of it.
It bugs me when all the gays have a big parade on the main street every summer, hey, you're gay? So what, good for you, but don't celebrate it in the form of a parade.

Now if this guy who wants to be a bishop is gay, but took a vow of celibacy, well then I don't know, if he doesn't have sex, then I don't see the problem.

Now, I'm not gay, but I also don't have a problem with someone doing what they want behind closed doors as consenting adults, as long as it doesn't affect me.

captainoblivious,

You're absolutly right, my comment was tongue in cheek, mainly because of all the media coverage that has been going on lately involving priests in the chruch, I probably shouldnt have said it, because this attitude is a big misconception.

For the record, just so you know, that isnt how I think.

01,

I must disagree with you here. Let me start by saying I am NOT gay. I do have many gay friends and they are not sickos or anything like you describe. For the most part I have found Gays to be pretty normal people. Gay preists are not what caused the church the problems they have had. Pedophiles are what caused that. There is a very big difference between Gay and Pedo. Pedos are sick freaks that should be kept away from kids. Gay men and women for the most part did not choose their life style, they were born that way. To prove that point do you remember the day you woke up and decided you are straight? I don't....I've just always been straight. It was not a decision I ever recall making. Most of the gay people I know arethe same way...they knew very early in life that they liked the same sex better.

Should this wanna be preist be allowed to be preist? I don't know, not my call, I think probably he should be allowed. But he should probably be watched a little more closely than others...of course the others should be watched a little more closely and if they touch a kid in a wrong way...they should be taken out and shot.

As far as gay getting married why not? they can't do any more harm to the institution than most staright couples that have kids to try to "save" a doomed marriage. Or a man and wife that have an "open" marriage. I know both types of couples.
I also know a gay couple that are commited to each other and do not hurt anyone. It's their life, let them live as they see fit.

People are people, I do not suport Gay Rights were the right of a gay person supercede the rights of anyone else. But they should be protected equally under the law.

oh boy, hope this makes sense.

for some reason the issue of same sex marriages stikes a nerve with me.

maybe its the issue of confusing sex, and the 'institution' or sanctity of a marriage.

i know people who are gay as well, and it doesnt bother me. the gay people that i know are good people, and are welcome in my home. as a whole, they are people just like everyone else, some good, some bad, they just however have a different sexual preference.

marriage on the other hand, at least to me, is a fundemental building block of a society. its all about procreation, raising a family, and it eventually boils down to the continuation of a race (mankind). when working right, a family raises young that will turn into new families, with values, and ideas, and that will help maintain a civil, living, growing planet.

this will never come out of a same sex marriage. i think a similiar sex marriage is a mockery of what a family should be all about.

i think consenting adults should be able to do what ever floats their boats sexually (as long as no one is sufferning due to what they are doing), i dont think this however spills over to turning into a marriage.

i am also not suggesting that people without children are somehow hurting society, but i do think that the premise of a marriage does relvolve around a family.

maybe the problem is that marriage means different things to different people and the term/arangement just cant appease all of them.

Question for bcr,

You mention that marriage is for a male and a female, not the same sex.
"its all about procreation, raising a family, and it eventually boils down to the continuation of a race (mankind)"

Do you need marriage for this?

Ah!, I know the answer to that, ask me, ask me...

You can make babies without marriage, but, to quote something I once heard... "dooh....it takes a Mommy and a Daddy to make a baby."
