Pretty cool take on America from British Journalist
"Of course we are the greatest country in the world....and if you don't like it....tough $*$*.
Bingo!
I also share the same enthusiasm for the USA, but comments like the one above are very 'off putting"
Being great and powerful is admirable, but saying it repeatedly is very classless and shows a lack of character.
Wife & I drove to Syracuse last week, and one of the things we love about America is the patriotism, almost every house we drove by had an American flag proudly hanging on the front lawn.
I really admire that.
Canada on the other hand, not many people seem to give a chit about being patriotic, well, showing it anyway.
I always put a Canadian flag on my antenna around Canada Day, and my buddies all laugh at it "oh man, is that ever gay, take it off"
Like I said, being strong and powerful is cool, not having to remind people about it every second is even cooler.

LOL, yeah Raoul, and I'll cancel my order on the Triumph Daytona 600R also.
Len,
I like Britain. Never had a thing against it or the people there. I'm glad the US was able to help. Triumph has been an American Icon for what seems like forever built by the British.
I'm glad 78% of the people in the world don't want to live here or like us also. I don't want them here.
I gave you an easy shot at me and you missed it...
Britain's Rolls Royce built the famous Merlin engine that made the P-51 so great.
Not to say the orginal American built Allison v-12 was not as good, it just didn't have the high altitude performance....well here....
Note: The P51 was designed for the British at their request....

But in the long run I am very patriotic, and I am glad someone over seas says they like the U.S. But even if you don't, what can you do about it?
Honestly?

Agreed...it works both ways though !!

And I didn't miss the bit about the Merlin.
Sore point at the moment I'm afraid.
One of my best friends who has serviced my Rolls Royce and Bentley cars for many years, and who I have done a lot of flying with, was killed while displaying probably the worlds finest restored Spitfire.
In France !
He was part of the largest formation of Spits since WW2 and had an engine problem.
He tried to force land on the runway but the stupid organisers had allowed the crowd to wander off across the main runway (It was the last display of the day) and he had to swerve onto an adjacent grass strip and caught the wingtip.
End of story.

Hey Rock....while we're on the subject....
Which wer'e not.
Get Bill Bryson's latest book .....
A short history of nearly everything.
You'll love it.
A down to earth (Sorry for that pun) look at the Universe and especially at the beginnings of the study of geology.
Like you I'm well versed in the subject but this has a really amusing sideways slant.
More in the usual forum if you're intrigued.

It is true and will remain so for hundreds of years that America is the number 1 superpower in the world. No one can touch America head on and survive.
We are the strongest, most wealthies, and most knowledgable country in the world and that is why others hate us. It must be a real bitch to hate something so much and NOT be able to do a damn thing about it...

But at least it was in a Spitfire.
That's right.
As you say if you can go doing what you love best I suppose that is a consolation to those left behind.
Before the Spit, Martin had restored what we call over here the Harvard.
Wonderful radial engine....the prop tips go supersonic at take off and the yowling noise is tremendous.
I had helped him put the wings on the thing.....hundreds of bolts all needing torquing down exactly so.
I think it was a US trainer that you called the T9 (Or am I having a senior moment).
Anyway that one still exists and Martins son, Carl, now flies it.

Hmm I need to look into that one....the Boeing PT-17 "Stearman" was the one I thought cadets started in in basic flight school during WWII along with the North American built Navy SNJ-4 "Warbird". I am not sure a T9 existed.
I want to make an amendmant about Britain. I said I had no problems. I have one.
On February 27, 1998 a statement was made that was heard all the way down here in Fort Worth Texas.
"The government fulfilled its pledge to remove all handguns from the streets of Britain today"
Wich was of course a lie. What they did do is remove the honest, law abiding, owners of their registered hand guns. Those that have unregestered handguns became criminals over night whether they where actually criminals or not.
That is my only beef with Britain.

We have some very good post in this thread and my hat is off to all. I would like to reiterate that there is absolutely nothing wrong with telling other countries if they don’t like it “tough sh*t” that is how it is, that is how it will always be.
When one starts caving in to some third worlds request then one becomes weak and then they are no longer a leader. A leader, America leads, if people follow great, if not so be it, BUT get in our way and America makes it very clear YOU WILL BE REMOVED! There is nothing wrong with that, it is being a leader.
I am sorry but someone made the comment that not very many people in the world want to be like America. Sorry that is NOT correct. It would be correct if the statement read something like:
Most of the rulers who rule their people using fear do not want to be like America because then they do NOT have the power. Most of the ordinary people of the world DO want to be just like America, it is a fact because it is NATURE plain and simple.
It is a natural aspect of any human being to want to be free. It is NOT a natural aspect of a human being to be ruled and held down by fear, never has been, never will be and that is a FACT.
Most of the world hates America because that is what their governments have BRAIN WASHED them to believe. When people ACTUALLY learn about America and the way we live, operate and treat others they can NOT wait to be just like us.
They do NOT want to be like France or most other Europeans countries except maybe like Britain.
Anyway, there is no reason why America or others like me can not say to others, either follow us (America) get out of the way (in other words don’t bug us or screw with us) or else be REMOVED.
America IS the superpower and always will be, the world is in the best possible condition it can be because America is the superpower. If America was not the superpower the world would be a living hell and that is a fact.
As I stated earlier:

You're back and at top form! This site is a lot less interesting without your ascerbic humor! (just filling in for Len with an obscure word...)
While I lived in Japan (I can hear the "here we go again" moans in the background), my colleagues of the native sort would write papers for presentation at international forums where they would try to point out how "international" they were. If they had to point it out, they were only confirming the opposite thesis. No one in America tries to prove how internationally relevant we are, it is obvious. So I always told them to leave it alone. It is sort of like going around telling people that you are smarter than most. It seems the only one listening to you is yourself. That is what I think about people who go around saying "America is the greatest and if you don't like it, well we will just have to blow you back to the Stone Age!" I like the "speak softly, and carry a big stick" sort of patriotism.
Anyone besides Raoul like Randy Newman's "Political Science"?
"Boom goes London, Boom Paree,
More room for you, more room for me!
They all hate us anyhow, let's drop the big one now!"

By the way, one of the earlier posts on this thread made the oft repeated statement that religion has been the root of the worlds problems. I guess I cannot let that one lie.
Let's see. Marxism tries to eliminate religion (the old "opiate of the people" line) and it was really, really good for Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Albania, etc. etc. etc. Christians, on the other hand, led the fight against slavery in both the US and in Britain. Christian values form the basis for our legal system, and concepts of crime and penance rather than real punishment. Churches feed the poor, and then turn around and (if they are doing good) teach them how to feed themselves. Great Christians in the history of the US include the likes of Washington, Lincoln, (General Lee!), (Stonewall Jackson!), and many others. Lincoln, while nodding toward Christianity most of his life, became deeply convicted during the Civil War, and wrote one of the most moving orations in the history war and politics (a truly long history). I am not talking about the Gettysburg Address, as eloquant as that was. I am talking about his second inaugural address. Here was a great man.
Christians led the sciences for centuries. It is only since Darwin that people have gotten the idea that science and faith are somehow at odds (actually, it is Darwin and faith who were at odds, and that is saying nothing about creationism). Christians seem to be always trying to take care of those who cannot take care of themselves; look around and see how many hospitals are faith-based. I have a friend who grew up in the Middle East as the daughter of missionaries. Her parents were doctors, and established a hospital in the UAE before they knew they had oil. To this day, the locals would rather use the Christian hospital (where people genuinely cared about their welfare) where they have to pay for service, than go to the government hospital, where treatment was free.
Yeah, there are crazies. People, who in the name of their religion decide to negate it. I honestly cannot defend "religion" that is not centered in Christ, because I feel that it matters which religion you are talking about, and I guess I am not going to apologize for believing one thing that I think is a truly positive force in the world, and not taking a stand with respect to other faiths, which might not, in my opinion, be particularly good for you or the world.
I have learned that you can decide for yourself which faith you believe in, but you cannot say that you do not have any faith. There are no worldviews that can exist with out unprovable articles of faith. Some of you may think that you can do without organized religion because you have seen things that are not right within it. Well, for every example of excess, I can find ten of redemptive miracles, and I am not talking about walking on water. God changes lives for the better, if you will let him.
Probably I violated all the rules for this board, but hey, I did not bring up the subject. I have written a rant, not well organized, but it is my story and I am sticking to it!
