I was reading this in the paper today and I heard about it before and I was wondering what you guys think about Winston leaving Nascar as the title sponsor. That means that they would not be able to call it the Winston Cup anymore. From what the article said, Nextel was probably going to be taking over as the title sponsor.

It mentioned something about they didn't want to market cigarettes to children so Winston was going to drop their sponsorship. That also means that the Nascar all star race would also not be able to be called The Winston and they would need a new name.

If they do change the name of the Winston cup because they don't want to target children, wouldn't they also have to change the name of the Busch Series. Since Busch is the name of a beer, they would need to change that too.

Just think, all this is because some WACKO complained about Nascar advertising smoking just because the sponsor was a cigarette maker. They have been the sponsor for over 40 years and now someone wants it changed.

This suck to me. How about you guys?

Like I said before, that just sucks. It has been the Winston Cup for a long time and now they have to change it, especially when racing is the fastest growing sport right now. I can already guess there are going to be many, and I mean many complaints about this.

But stuff like this happens all the time. Companies have to change names after years of existance, because there is some kink of legal problem. Nobody even had a problem with it until RJ Reynolds had that lawsuit against them.

Things like that just make me so mad.

It could be worse. Planter couldv'e sponsored it and it would have been called the Nut Cup or something.

So its o.k. to have an alchohol company sponsor the Busch series but a cigarette company cannot sponsor the big boys huh?Something very wrong with that picture.

I see a lack of ***** in this situation. Somebody buckled under the pressure. I wouldv'e told em to get bent and if they didn't like it go somewhere else. It's been the Winston cup forever. I bet Dale Earnhardt rolled over in his grave over this BS. Imagine all the money that is going to have to be spent on Advertising to change from Winston Cup to Nextell Cup. Maybe they will supply nut cups to those that have them left because whoever made this decision is lacking them.

 

well i started smokng not because a ***** nosed cartoon camel, a cowboy, or because the companies sponser sports and the like, i started because i was dumb and wanted to **** a girl off at a party after i had quit for two years, but i guess i am a dumas* but that is me

As a smoker myself I think it sucks that Winston had to let NASCAR go with another sponsor but it was not directly due to whiners b*tching about the smoking advert of the sponsorship. It was due to the lawsuits that the cigarette companies have lost costing them millions of $$. Along with the all out assult on smokers in general. Winston told NASCAR to find new sponsorship even though they had just signed a 5 year deal to continue sponsoring.

It's all about the money for Winston. They aren't making as much so they can't spen the 80 or so million it takes to sponsor the top NASCAR series.

NEXTEL Cup....hmm...maybe in about 10 years it will sound ok....

Winston didn't have to let NASCAR go they chose to. They (winston) wanted out of the long term agreement they had with NASCAR because they could no longer afford it. NASCAR has been looking for a sponser for some time now.

I think it might all come full circle though...

With cigerettes having been linked to several adverse health effects, I think that we may see a similar problem in several years from repeated cell phone useage...

By then, maybe the cig companies will be back on their feet again and we'll have Winston yet again...

Its my inderstanding that this is also in the Formula 1 series. Ferrari with there Marlboro cars had to take the advertising off one race because they were not allowed to advertise Cigs.

Cars looked pretty strange without the ol familiar Marlboro stickers on em.

 

then it would turn into rush hour with huge accidents every time the green flag is dropped.
