If you get the 5.4, you'll have the 9.75" rear axle ready to go. If you get a 4.6, you'll have an 8.8" axle until you destroy it, when you'll need the 9.75. Just think about which way you want to go...

Take advice from a guy with a V6 and go with the 5.4L. That way, if you ever want to make it into an L, all you'll have to do is throw the charger on it. Go with a 99-02 5.4L V8 XLT Flareside.

That way you'll be able to put the Lightning tails on too. Its the only way to go if you want to look like an L and have an extra row of seating. You will have to figure out something for the side skirts though. Street Scene makes some cool ones.

Okay.. the trucks you're looking at are 15k and you say a used Lightning is still around 20k...

You'll spend WAY more than 5 grand in parts to convert the 15k truck into a 20k truck. You'll just have an extra row of seats and still be a FAKE (BUT yours will be a custom truck not a factory truck)

I just don't understand the logic here... you can't afford a more expensive truck, but you can afford to spend A BUNCH of money on parts to make it look like the more expensive truck. Seems easier to afford maybe an extra $100 or $200 a month for the more expensive truck rather than dropping a few grand at a time on parts.

In my situation (I put A LOT of miles on my vehicle) I would have to consider resale value too.

Sorry, I'm not trying to criticize you. I'm just stating a few things I would think about before I jumped into this scenario.

Well put TEK. I agree 200%.

It does seem odd that you want to put a bunch of money into mods and such when you could just go ahead and get what you want from the begining and save the hassles.

It will take A LOT more than slapping a blower on a F150 equipped 5.4 to turn it into a Lightning!
You have the air to water intercooler, trans mods, suspension, etc.
I admire what you want to do, but I not think its cost effective to piece meal it together. Buts its your truck............

i know what he means....he probably just digs working on his truck. and will just put money into this project as the money comes. this way if he is short a little month there are no payments to get behind on. just a mod that will have to wait....

i understand and think its cool. good luck! btw, i just got a 5.4L reg cab short bed. its nice...

I don't think your aim is too high i just think it's off..?Why are you going for a L ?If you want one buy one...If you want a modded truck that is custom go with that, don't stay contained to just the description of an L extra-cab knock-off !...I'm not really into the showroom rocket set ups either..I like someone who takes the time to MAKE a car or truck fast ....I love the guys who buy L's don't know how to change oil and think they are the baddest guy in town ! HA....Don't get me wrong I love some of the L's on this board ..There are some crazy set-ups !!! Check out RUSLOW'S, and Tim Skelton's ride's those are probably my favorites..There more of an all around speed and handling type truck not just a Bling,or 1/4 mile rig....That's my style.....I have an all around truck,What i really need is a BUILT engine now i'm at that magic bolt on limit ....I need to crack the enginge if i want to go faster now.. Go build that truck but drop the LIGHTNING name....

I think you should buy the V6, then take it out and put a riceburner engine in it, lower it, put a big A$$ wing on the back with a crapload of stickers all over it, and a big tailpipe you can stick your head in, and call it a Civic

The V6 is a 4.2L and not the 4.0L you mentioned earlier. I just wanted to get me a free post in with that tid bit of info.

That's it, I do some website consulting on the side, and when I have a good month with that, say hello to new parts. It is a little unpredictable when I get business, so I'd rather make sure I can make the payments and add on a little at a time.
