Also in the news...

They finally found the last MIA, a kid from south Texas whose mother is a single mother. He gives his life for Iraqi freedom, and to protect you and me, and his mom gets a memory, and probably not very much else. We owe these guys a whole lot, and I wish we could do more for them.

Rush says that members of congress get a pension of some huge amount, but the guys they send off to fight for us get some pretty small amount. We, as a country, should do more for those who are willing to go do what needs to be done.

Anybody else feel just a little bit helpless to thank these guys?

I do. Saying thanks just seems so trite & pales in comparison to the sacrifices the troops make. I still make sure I say thank you to active military or vets but I don't feel I'm DOING anything - at least nothing that matters.
Thanks for posting this TexasSteve.

You had me there until you mentioned ole Pumpkin Head

Yes, its a shame that the dead GI's get a $6000 payment and their surviors get a small pension. I was reading in Time magazine today that its before Congress to raise the death benifits, but Iam sure Pumpkin Head would not say anything about that.

You know whats truely sad, is a fat load of crap like him can make the wages he does will a young man that servers our country is paid sh*t.

I guess you can figure out what I think of ole, whats his name

When I was last in the military in 93 the death benifit was $100,000 to who ever the service person choice to give it to, be it the wife, if married, or parents, if not married or the kids.

The children of someone that dies in the military get a check until the age of 18, as well as medical and dental paid for, or until they are finished with collage. The wife on the other hand will get a check until she dies "unless" she gets remarried, as well as dental and medical. I had an aunt, who was receiving checks from the goverenment for almost 20 years after her husband killed himself. She had a guy she lived with for about 15 years.

At the time the $100,000 only cost between $5 - $8 a month to have.

So all in all the military does take care of a spouse and/or kids if a service persons dies while in the military, or active duty if in the reserves.

I know myself I felt more secure for my daughter when I was in the Navy then I do now. If something would have happen her medical and dental would of been taking care of "no" money out of her pocket, and she would for sure would have had collage paid for, as well as money help from the military towards school. Plus receive a monthly paycheck from the military all because I choose to serve my country.

Now if something happens there will be some money, but no medical or dental, no paycheck every month until 18, or finished with collage.

Trust me when I say this, even saying a thank you to someone in the service does a "GREAT deal" and to most means alot.

So thank you very much who are now serving or who have served...

That's insurance

What I was talking about was a death monetary payment. It came up in the article because of the payments to civilians approaching 1 millions dollars for the people killed in the 9/11 attacks.
I just looked for the articile, so I can quote it, but I can't find it. But it went on to say that the money was 9K and it was before Congress to atleast double it. The lady that was quoted in the story, had one child and she gets 1400 a month from the military (Just enough to make the house payment, but nothing more). Now Iam sure any lump sum insurance would be more, but thats something the GI would have to buy!

I think our Country should take better care of the men/women who lose their lives defending our way of life. Way better care than someone who loses their life in a terrorist attack

I absolutely agree with you. Just saying we didn't get totally screwed in the military. That really pissed me off a bit when familys from 9/11 were getting millions of dollars in death benifits. Made NO sense at all to me why that got so much money, and then to hear some of the familys bitch about what ever amount they were going to get they would subtract any life insurance money they got. Some got very pissy over that.

Then you had people getting pissed that if they took the money they wouldn't be able to sue the airlines, etc etc etc. well duhhh these people were getting more cash then they ever deserved.

Anyway I agree the military should be MUCH better taken care of, but I would rather see it in MUCH better pay and benifits when they are alive. When I was in you had people in for say 5 - 6 years that were the payrate of E4, and get this "were eligible for food stamps" WTF??????

They need to cut the "welfare" program by 50% and take all that money and give it in pay raises to the military, they need to cut the "education" program by 50% and take all that money and give it in pay raises to the military. There are alot of goverenment programs that are a waste of tax payer money they should cut and then send it over to the military in the form of pay raises...

Here's another thought..........Good ole George proposed a new tax cut somewhere in the 700 million dollar range. Now thats fine, except it was for the 1% or 2% of the taxpayers at the highest tax charts! F-em, there don't need no stinkin tax cut

Why not take that 700 million dollars of goverment money and put it right into the military payroll? And I don't mean those fat cats in Washington Just how friggin wrong is it, that our men and women fighting for freedom in another country, have to depend on food stamps to feed their families. Food stamps should be for un-employed drunks......hehe.......so how do I get food stamps
