POETIC JUSTICE
Another lesson learned the hard way! One of the many headaches that Puerto Rican Island of Vieques. In the waning years of the Clinton administration, protesters demanded that the U.S. Navy abandon bombing and naval gun fire exercises that had taken place on the largely uninhabited island for nearly seventy years. It became a leftist cause. Liberal icons bumped into one another to fly to Puerto Rico, boat over to the island, trespass (but never on a day that there was an exercise scheduled) and get arrested for the benefit of the New York Times or Newsweek. They included the Reverend Al Sharpton, Mrs.
Jesse Jackson, Joan Baez, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Edward Olomos, Michael Moore and Ramsey Clark, to name a few. Hillary Clinton, then running for the U.S. Senate in New York, chastised the U.S. Navy for not bowing to the "will of the citizens of Puerto Rico", until her husband, a week before the election, issued an executive order to phase out the facility by 2003, despite recommendations to the contrary by his own Secretary of Defense and the Chief of Naval Operations. In 2002, the bombing exercises were transferred to an Air Force bombing
range in central Florida, not far from the Jacksonville and Pensacola Naval Air Stations. In January, many of the protesters were back in Puerto Rico, celebrating the final bombing exercise on Vieques and waved Puerto Rican flags and placards that read "U.S. Navy, get out of Puerto Rico."
On February 21, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced that the U.S. Navy will close the Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station in Puerto Rico in 2004, eliminating 1200 civilian jobs as well as 700 military positions. This naval facility is estimated to have put nearly $300 million annually into the local
economy. The next day a stunned Governor Sila Calderon, held a news conference in San Juan, protesting the base closure as a serious blow to Commonwealth's fragile economy. The governor stated that "The people of Puerto Rico don't now or never did have an interest in closing the Vieques bombing range or the Roosevelt Roads naval base. My government is interested in both staying in Puerto Rico."
When asked, Admiral Robert J. Natter, Commander-on Chief, Western Atlantic Command, said, "Without Vieques, I see no further need for the facility at Roosevelt Roads. None." So, Yanqui go home? Fine. But we'll take our dollars with us. Hasta la vista . baby!
On February 21, the Secretary of Defense also announced that starting this year, the U.S. European Command would begin moving most if not all of its active combat and support units from bases in Germany to others being established in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Turkey to "better position them for rapid deployment to likely hot spots in those parts of the world." Immediately the business and government leaders in the German states of Hesse, Rhineland and Wurttemburg, protested the loss of nearly $6 billion in revenue each year from the bases and manpower to be displaced. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry speculated that the move may be "what the Americans call 'payback' for the actions of this government in opposing military action in Iraq."
Whatever, does anyone know the German translation for "Hasta la vista.. baby?"

Excellent post. Goes to prove what I have stated over and over. Socialist Liberals, like Hillary Clinton, Reverend Al Sharpton, Mrs.,Jesse Jackson, Joan Baez, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and others like them do NOT have any brains, education, nor any type of logical thought process. They jump on a cause that they “think” makes them look good and hope makes them more friends only to find out in the end how STUPID they really were to begin with.
Screw Puerto, Germany, France and any other country that don’t have a clue about their economy. If their economies fail no big deal it will have very little if any impact on America.

When I came home from Viet nam I reported in to my new duty station (Marine Corps air station, Cherry pt., N.C.) and they told me that Iwas going to Vieques island---something about Fidel Castro was mentioned.
Having just come from thirteen months in 1st Marine division I thought "Oh,no I'm back in it again!!!" The deployment was supposed to be a "fire exercise" but I hardly ever saw any bombing in three months and Rosey roads was full of all kinds of NATO ships. What the????...
Anyway, we stayed on a beach on Vieques for three months--it was just when I was a Boy Scout--camping, swimming,hiking--going to the little ville nearby (I think it was called "Fajardo") for Cerveza at the cantina, with a steel band and senoritas you could dance with but not date.Got to know a lot of Puerto Ricans--all very nice people---they had us over for supper and gave us some of their local mint liquor
(good stuff!!) Nobody complained about any bombing/shelling. It was like a three month R&R (I needed it) It wasn't till years later when the Hillarys and Jessies started crying about our big nasty military that I heard of any protesting. What the hay
?? I feel sorry for the Viequens(sp?) no industry there and a minimal agricultural economy and no Marines/sailors to spend money locally. Maybe we ought to send the Puerto Ricans a boatload of granola chomping,Volvo driving/gated community living liberals to live there. Nahhhh.

Smpoyser:
First let me say thank you for your service to our country. From what I have read and learned about Viet nam it was one very nasty war, not to mention how it absolutely sickens me to this day how you and others who served in Viet nam were treated on your arrival back to the states.
For what it is worth, you have my utmost respect, and though I was only about 5 or 6 years old when that conflict was over (I am 38 now, born in 1964) I would still like to say thank you to you and the others that served in Viet nam and I am very proud of all of you.
I have absolutely NO respect for any person, especially an American, who would burn the flag. In my opinion burning the flag is NOT freedom of speech because I look at it as an action. Speech is words and not actions. If I ever see anybody burning a flag I will exercise the same “Freedom of speech” as the flag burner. In other words since their “violent action” is protected under “freedom of speech” I would hope that my “violent action” of beating their @ss is protected under the same “freedom of speech” those morons hide behind.

You're welcome, and thanks for saying what you did. I have to say that I never did go for hollywood nutsos, pseudo politicians like jessie jackson, and you name it. The one thing they all have in common is absolutely NO first hand experience in what they're complaining about. Another thing: the older I get the worse I get--I'll be a REAL character by the time I retire---which will probably be never what with the economy.
No you didn't say Jesse Jackson? Talk about a *****. I'd love to know how much of Toyotas' money is in his bank account (AKA Push Coalition) What a joke of a man he is.

So would their morning drink be a Double-Decaffinated-Chocolate-Latte-with a splash of non alcohloic rum?
