Flowmaster: Destroying America With Thunder
Flowmaster, manufacturer of loud, hot-rod "performance exhaust systems," has won this month's Noisy Dozen award from Noise Free America. Flowmaster, based in Santa Rosa, California, proclaims that it manufactures "high performance mufflers and complete exhaust systems." It has hundreds of different exhaust sytstems that produce "an aggressive muscle car sound."
Mark Huber, Noise Free America's Communication Director, said that "Flowmaster promotes its trademarked product lines with names like 'American Thunder.' They use the smarmy appeal of false patriotism. They promise 'powerfully aggressive sound outside the vehicle' and 'the true tone of American muscle and performance.'" Huber also commented that "Flowmaster fans who succumb to this low-class advertising seem to think they are displaying their patriotism when they rumble through neighborhoods disturbing the peace and ruining property values, in vehicles covered with American flag decals. Actually, by their illegal actions, they desecrate the American flag and disrespect the people for whom it stands."
In Virginia, like most states, it is illegal to drive cars equipped with these loud, rumbling products on public roads. Flowmaster aggressively markets these products, knowing that as soon as they are installed, the purchaser is breaking the law.
An elementary school teacher in Richmond, Virginia, said, "I resent the fact that adolescent boys of all ages regularly drive their rumble mobiles next to my school. While I'm trying to have 'quiet time,' they're having 'hot rod time.' Hot rod drivers are damaging the ability of my students to learn--as well as harming their hearing and raising their blood pressure."
This educator also stated that "people who install hot rod exhausts are breaking the law. State and local police departments should enforce the law. State vehicle inspectors should look for illegal hot rod equipment." This educator knows of local and state police offers who have Flowmasters on their personal vehicles. She fears they may be sympathetic to hot rod law breakers.
Ted Rueter, director of Noise Free America, observed that "these illegal hot rod exhausts increase noise levels, which produces chaos and confusion. In this atmosphere, accidents increase, property values decline, and criminality flourishes. Flowmaster's noise machines harm the quality of American life."
Noise Free America is a national organization devoted to opposing noise pollution. Their web site is at http://www.noisefree.org.

Guess that person has never heard a Harley, or some of them Rice Rockets.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the sound of a Harley, but they are LOAD…
It amazes me to see these people bitch about someone’s car/truck with a nice sound exhaust, even loader then factory, but no where near as load as a Harley or some other bikes but never mention motorcycles.
I am NOT knocking motorcycles, just the point. When I was in the Navy I had a guy that lived next to me, had a beautiful Harley, very LOAD, and he would bitch about my friends truck that had an exhaust (don’t know the brand) but it sounded damn good. Anyway if I had to give each a level of sound from 1 – 10, I would give the Harley a 10 and his truck a 6 – 7.

I have a Flowmaster on my truck and I appreciate the sound of a V8 through a "performance" exhaust but I do think that it's a rapidly growing phenomenon. It seems as though 80% of the V8 powered vehicles have a loud exhaust. I heard a Dodge truck today that sounded like a dragster with only headers. I think they went too far.
I am going to change my exhaust because it's too loud inside the truck. At around 55mph in 5th the drone in the cabin is very annoying. A lot of people tell me the truck sounds great from the outside, I would sometimes like to hear the sterio on the inside.
I'm not too surprized to see an article like this. It's seems that these days there is always someone b!tching about something. I try to worry about what I'm doing not what everyone else is doing. Maybe these people would do better if they did this too.
Now the Harleys. Thats a whole other issue. If I'm sitting in the house watching TV and one goes by, I miss about thirty seconds of what is being said. Does all that noise make thoes things run better?

"For those about to Rock KAAAAAAAAAAABOOOOOOOOOOM"
I have the loudest flowmaster available in the street muffler series. An original Flowmaster 40 series si/do with 18" long tips. Let me tell you, it is NOT very loud at all. I guess that's partly because I have a v6. But I'm changing it out for a custom single Magnaflow exhaust pretty soon. Hopefully I'll regain some of my low end torque with the new exhaust.
Those people are lame. FlowMaster has been using the American Thunder name for their 2 chamber catback systems for years and they are now just noticing it?
Im not a Flowmaster user by any means nowadays but 12 years ago, they brought innovation to the exhaust community that kicked it all off when it was stagnit.
All you had then was Cherry Bombs, Purple Hornies, Walker/Dynomax and Trush mufflers.

I eliminated the muffler all together on my wifes truck (Chevy) it sounded good, but she is a nurse with a heavy right foot and started doing home health care and had to drive in residential areas real early in the morning. We wanted to respect the people in the neighborhood so we put a Flowmaster on to quite the truck down...
So the Flowmaster helped keep things quite in my case, see it is all how you look at it
Next they will be complaining about the whine from the L's supercharger...
I love the sound of the whine, the exhaust and the bark at 2nd gear... now that ALWAYS turns heads
