2000 SVT Contour

This may sound silly to some of the more dedicated F-Series guys here but I am considering trading my truck for a 2000 SVT Contour. There are several reasons for this, not the least of which is that after becoming foster parents we have a few more bodies to fit into our vehicles now. Another thing is my 35 mile commute that is sucking the life out of my wallet on gas. I've considered other vehicles such as a 2003 SVT Focus (too small) the new Mazda 6 Sport Sedan (sweet but pricey) and others. When it comes down to it the Contour is affordable, practical and from what I hear a very fun drive. My question is this, anyone here have any experience with them, the SVT especially? I have already put in a request with both my local Ford dealers so they are finding one for me to drive. Anything I should know about them before buying? I should probably mention that we're also trading my wife's Taurus for a 2003 Expy if that makes anyone feel better. Her commute is much shorter than mine and we still have the camper to tow!

I've driven one....all I can say is that is one moving car. The only thing I have noticed about the contour is that the interior feels cheap to me. Not as cheap as a focus but still cheap.

I saw a used one last year at the SVT dealership. I think they look pretty cool.
My friend owns a regular contour, and loves it.

Anyone know why they stopped making it?

trade your wife's taurus in on the contour and swap vehicles with her... you drive the car & she drives the truck!

I've driven the SVT and loved it. The only thing I have noticed about some of the ones I see on the road is that some of the ground effects tend to fall off. I don't know if it is from abuse or they simply are not well adheared. Expecially the vent on the rear between the tail pipes.

My brother drives a regular coutour and it's been a pretty good car. He has about 140k on it and it is still going strong. Drives nice, also.

I use to date a girl that owns one. That car was a blast to drive. Alot of fun in traffic and even more fun when your on offramps by yourself.

I still see her on occasions and her car is running great with 100K miles on it I have never heard of any mechanical problems with her car, because if she has a problem, usually it becomes my problem too

I know a kid that has a 1998 SVT Contour with his Charger and early 90s Mustang GT, I have ridden in the Contour and it is very nice (he has the leather interior), and he has not had any problems. I have heard that the previous body concept contours (before the most current concept) had some mechanical problems, but I have only heard good things about the more recent contours. If you want to talk to my friend with the 1998 then tell me, he has done many mods to it also so he can tell you more about that.

Got an email back from one of my Ford dealers and he says he can't find the SVT I want and will have to special order one. That means 6-8 weeks and more $$$. The time is no problem, I wont be ready to get it until April anyway but I don't want to have to pay more because he had to make an extra phone call to his buddy in Atlanta to get one. I can drive the 45 miles myself. I've checked them out online pretty well and think it's the way to go. GreenBuck50 brings up another valid point too, their "modability". Lots of mods to be done to these things. I even found a supercharger for the 3.0 Duratech! SWEET!

I agree onemilmhz... it is better for you to drive the 45 miles and I am sure more cost effective. I am sure that you have seen the page also, but if not check out http://www.contour.org/. I don't have a contour, but looks like a decent web site. I thought the looks of the contours were pretty decent, and if I ever buy anything besides a truck or SUV, a contour would be a car I would strongly consider. By the way... this is my friend's contour... you can check it out at http://www.contour.org/profiles/show...gi?palmer-sam. Tell me if you wanna talk to him. I am sure he would love to talk to you if you need help.

GreenBuck50,
Thanks for the replies. I have checked out contour.org and found a lot of good info there. You're friend's car is sweet. I probably won't do that much to mine if I get one but I will definitely put my touch on it.

If you check out the classifieds over at www.contour.org, there are a few SVT Contours for sale. Some of the sellers seem motivated....if you know what I mean

Yeah, I have not talked to my friend in a few weeks since I have been abroad in London and actually saw his contour for sale... it is a sad day.
