since the Statue of Liberty was brought over in 1886 at a price of 3 million, if it were to happen again today, the generous gift would be worth around $54,818,181
if the price was $532,000, the price today would be around $9,721,090

Thank's for the generous gift.

These are useing the 1913 CPI of 9.9 (since we dont have 1886 figures) and the current CPI of 180.9

OK, just one more point and I'll let this go, I promise.

Yes, 54 million is a lot in todays dollars.
In todays mindset of "Big Government take care of me" it's hard for us to comprehend that all of those funds were privately raised.
Joseph Pulitzer set a goal of $100,000 and stated that anyone who contributed, no matter how small, would get their name in the paper.

Likewise, the funds raised in France were raised privately.

So, no one was forced to pay for the gift nor did they pay indirectly through taxes.

Sincerely,

La Raoul

Actually...

I think it should be Le Raoul. Of course, any language that pronounces "an-ti-q" (antique) as "an-teek" is pretty hosed up anyway.

La is used in French in reference to "feminine" words, while Le is used with "masculine" ones.

Something you aren't telling us Raoul?

Le Raoul, Monsiuer Grande Bouche (just kidding)

All funds were from the private sector but the Government did donate the land which was Ft. Wood. Hmmm... Does this mean Miss Liberty is sitting on Wood.

What! The French back someone up? Yeah, RIGHT! They're behind us all the way! And running away as fast as they can!

Unhappy

"Capt Raoul calling all available Armed Forces of France"
"ammunition running low..."
"constant bombardment from opposing forces..."
"anybody there?...."
"France, come in..."
Come in, France...do you read me, Over."

They cost money!

Maybe the UN will give me a loan and then I can pay mercinarys to attack you and then the UN can try to pass a resolution against me but I'll veto it.
(then I'll default on the loan)

UN, berry berry good to me.

The French military can't be that bad, people from all over the world choose to join the French Foreign Legion. Let's see, there was Laurel and Hardy join the French Foreign Legion, then I believe The Three Stooges Joined, I think even Daffy Duck joined once. TV can't be wrong, so the French must really be great at battle tactics with all these people rushing to join.
I mean, you guys all make the French at war seem like a bunch of comedians.
