Love my 97. Build date 3/97. 99,867 miles on it as of today. Bought two years ago with 62,000 on it. No regrets at all.
Either one will do you fine. I've heard more "problems" starting with the 99's more then anything.......

All I have had is a 2000 and a 2002 F150, so I can't say much about the 97 or 98. But it does seem that Ford made improvements every year. Which ever you decide, find out if it has been in the shop much by the previous owner. Also, I would go with one that has the least miles on. I'm not going to tell you which one to get, because that is your choice to make. Just consider everything before you make your decision
I have a 98 with 47,000 miles and no problems. Build date of 6/98. The only problem I have is with pinging. It comes and goes depending on the outside temp.
I love my truck. If you find a good deal on one, buy it!!

To put some of the 97 myths to rest....
I have a 97 5.4L 4x4 ORP. Its got 68,500 miles on it and has ran oversized tires for 4 1/2 years on it. (Kinda like pulling a trailer all the time, right?)
I hate saying this all the time as of late, but not one single problem thus far. (Knocks on wood, AGAIN)
