i have something i need answered...
now a while back when i was young there was a family that moved in upstairs from my house(the 2nd flr apt)and they previosly lived on a farm and were what you would consider country folk.
now the father would use a term "blat",or in the active form"blattin"in a sentence like ..."you better quit youre blattin or you will go to bed without supper" and it was used referring to what i call crying.but where do people get words like blattin and ballin associated with crying???

LMAO at this thread. I havent laughed this hard in quite awhile.
Pop is definitely a northern, midwest kind of thing. I say pop all the time and Im a Swede/Norwegian Minnesota farmboy.
Coke is definitely a southern thing. I went down to Georgia last year and I was in a restaurant...the waitress asked me what I wanted to drink. I said Coke as in Coca Cola. She asked me what kind? I said I wanted a Coke...and again she asked me what kind and again I said Coke. She then said what kind of Coke do you want? I said what do you mean, theres only one kind of Coke isnt there? It was then that my fiancee's aunt, who was nearly busting a gut laughing at this problem I was having in ordering my beverage of choice, came to my aid and explained what Coke meant down there. She lives in a suburb of Atlanta but she grew up in MN so she knew what I was talkin about the whole time and decided to let me sweat it out a little.
As for other southern sayings...I dont know if this is real or not. But I heard it in "The Green Mile," which was set down south.
"I think the cheese done slid off his cracker" implying that the guy had gone nuts.

More;
"A bit" or "A spell"......a while.
"Taters"......potatoes
"Maters"......tomatos
"RC Cola and a Moon Pie".....lunch
"Ya hear?"......understand?
"Eye tallion"......like in "Italian" sausage.
"Chew" or "Chaw"......Mail Pouch, Red Man, etc.
"Git".......get.
"Mother" or "Father"......instead of "My mother" or "My father".
"A passle of"........A lot of. (What's a passle, anyway?)
"Yaught 2".....Instead of "You should".

a real southerner doesn't use the word "pop" instead of soda.. thats a yankee thing. everything is called "coke" down here.

In VA we call most all soft drinks Coke, if we are referring to them in general.
Here some more from a southern-rooted family:
-"She stuck to him like white on rice"
- "Yo-uh-peein"---European
-"Chicargo"--Chicago
-"RC Cola and a Moon Pie"--BREAKFAST and lunch
-"He's a real hummdinger."--
----More to come later-----

Growin up in a little ol' town down here in the south, that's how everybody talks 'round here.
Let me see.......
"com'on back now ya hear"----Come back later
"I ain't goin, how's bout you"-----I am not going, How about you
"Git on outta here, now"------Telling someone to leave
Theres many more but ya'll done said most of them.
Whenever some one talks to a southerner in person, They always have to ask what the southerner just said, especially if they are from another part of the country. Oh yeah, most of us always have a hard time in english classes. Dang, teachers tying to teach us how to write and talk correctly, My English instructer always gives us vocab words. I cain't even say have of 'em.
HAHAHA

Ar-right or Aiiite..... Alright (My favorite.)
You guys have it all wrong with the Coke thing. The combination word "Sodee-pop" is much more common.
