Unhappy OT: CDRW drives

Alright I have a question for you CDRW gurus out there. I have had 2 CDRW drives in the last year and half that have gone south on me. The first Yamaha drive stuck in burn mode and took out the disc as well as the drive. Nice smell from that one. My replacement TDK just went south this morning giving me all sorts of read and right errors. It wont even read my other discs anymore as well as the CDRW discs I archive on.

Anyone have a suggestion on a good reliable drive out there that will hold up?? Dont need the DVD burner style yet but just a good CDRW to burn cds and archive some databases daily onto.

The system isnt the cause as its a new P4 3.06/1g mem/240g (2x120)HDs on raid and striped/ Ti4400 video/Audigy sound/ raid/GB lan etc system with all new parts and case. Cooling isnt the cause as its a Thermaltake case with 6 fans that will suck a paper up to the front so I know there is airflow there. I`m just tired of replacing these drives so fast...

Thanks guys

I just replaced an old 8x Sony that I have had for years. It didn't need to be replaced, but a buddy wanted it and gave me a new 52x for it. So far I have had Sony, Memorex, and a couple of no-names, and have had good luck with all of them. Many of the "no-names" that you see on the shelf are actually manufactured by other companies - LiteOn has a great reputation. A lot of people swear by them, and are willing to pay a premium for them. Plextor is another brand that many people seem to favor.

Hey, You use the Open/Close button dont you? Just FYI you should NEVER push the shuttle with your finger to close it.

Do you abuse the drives? CDRW's aren't a product prone to failures so I don't know what your problem could be. I have owned several computers with CDRW's and never had a single problem with the hardware. The software is a different story.

Well to answer some questions.
I do use the button to open and close the trays and no I dont abuse them.
I burn about 10-15cds a week on them and use them to archive on CDRW daily also. I do a lot of application development for many databases that have to be saved and sent to different people. The easiest way is to put them all on CDR for each individual and then end of day put em all on CDRW.
The first drive stuck in burn mode which I couldnt help. The second one was giving errors that I thought may have been due to dirty innards. I blew it out and then ran a CD cleaner through it and it was still doing it.
I was just looking for one that would last more than a year seeing they go into my new systems as get them. I use it alot for work so I need a reliable one...

Go to best buy and buy the cheapest one you can find. I bought and LG drive from them for like 80 dollars plus 20 dollar rebate. Never saw the rebate but has been kicking for over 2 years with no problems. Cd burners are not items that tear up usually. You might be getting errors because you are trying to write cds at to high a speed. I know my drive does 4x great, but at 8x it kinda acts weird sometimes. I dunno but sometimes i think cheaper stuff works better for some reason. I bought an expensive monitor and it didn't last but a year. Went and got a cheap one and it has lasted much longer.
