Depends on the situation.

If I'm just talking to people on AIM or something I might use those abbreviations, along with a few others, but I sure as hell don't use them in an essay or something of that nature.

Yes, I know what your talking about (LOL) I don't work at an autoshop but when since I develop automated test equipment where I work some people "think" I know about auto computers and the codes. They will sometimes tell me "My truck/car is throwing me a code" I usally ask "Did you catch it?" and what is funny is they don't usally understand what I am asking and that I am playing with them. They usally tell me not this time but I will watch for it to throw the code again... LOL, sometimes I feel like telling them to try to catch it the next time with a mit, but then they figure out I am being a smart as* with them LOL

aww wth? You be whack. IMHO you need . IMO it is always cool to use abreviations like ****. We all use them FYI.

They are good on the dedtailing board i visit. There's about 500 products, and you can pretty much tell what people are talkin bout. DACP (Dual action cleaner polish) 3m smr (3m swirl mark remover) ect ect ect....

Actually some of my posts qualify for War and Peace, so I guess I am not Shakespear.
I do it more so to be a wise-n-himer ( is that better then smart@ss ?), and denote scarsam.

That's me you are complaining about.
That is from work, when a module pukes it guts out, the code geeks would say is tossing a FE2-18 error.
That is where I got it from, so now I know it drives you nuts either I will a) stop doing it or b) do it more often
Maybe I should not model my verbage after a bunch of coding geeks.
