Totally O/T over/under or side by side?

I want a new shotgun and after shooting Remington and Browning Auto's my whole life I want to try a double gun. I was looking at a Bretta Whitewing for around $1000.00 but my partner in my airplane who is an avid hunter says a side by side (a good one) is a much better gun. His guns are all English and cost $3000 to $5000! They are a thing of beauty. He say's I can get a good Spanish side by side for $1500.00. Any thoughts?

Jerry

I prefer Browning Citori O/U. But it's really more a personal taste than anything else. I would suggest going to a store and try them all. But do expect to pay $1K+ for a good O/U or S/S shotgun.

I have a Berreta 686 Onyx and I absolutely love it. Slim and light. Had the cones lengthened and the barrels ported...at least 10K rounds through it...zero problems. Its all what feels good to you and pick one that fits you.

Thumbs up Ruger Red Label

It's not side by side, but still a very quality gun, and can be had for under 1 grand generally.

I would get a H&K Fabarm 12 guage pump with extended magazine and full stock that also has more of a pistol grip in it... vented barrell, all black, looks totally bad. Tactical shotgun basically.

I'm sorry, but you didn't say what you were going to do with the gun. Do you mostly target practice or hunt? (It matters, unless you're buying on the basis of looks) If hunting, what type of hunting? I have a different shotgun for clay, dove, rabbit, quail (all $700 or less), then there's the >$700 for show/range that mostly stay locked in the case...

Mostly I want it to hunt dove and quail. I have all the shotguns I need (12 ga. 1100 Rem, 20 ga 1100 Rem, Browning sweet 16) I have always wanted a DB.

Personally I prefer side-by-side. My grandfather has one that I used to shoot when I was alot younger. Forgot what brand it is, I'll check when I get home. But all I remember was that it was accurate, well built, old and HEAVY.

BTW - this should get thrown in GD, there are some very gun knowledgable non-L owners.

I have the Regency 98 and picked it up in Italy. It is an over and under and sweet 12 guage.

Personally, I prefer a ss, but I must admit I've never shot an OU. I just wish I had an extra grand to spend on a new shotgun

My wife told me no more guns until she some gets jewelry - and I hate buying jewelry - what a waste of money!

I know what you mean, but you have to look at this way. Jewerly does maintain it's value pretty good.

I grew up shooting side by side. It's really a matter of
personal preference. Go to the store and get a feel for
them. Maybe your buddy will let you shoot his to get a
feel for it.

Since you are use to looking down one barrel, you will probably prefer an over & under over the two-barreled sight plane of a side-by-side. I grew up shooting a Remington 870 which has similar stock dimensions as your 1100's. When I decided to upgrade to an over & under, I chose a Remington Peerless because the stock fit me like my 870. Remington doesn't make the Peerless any more, but I think that they have come out with another model of O/U.

I've never hunted dove before, but a Browning Citori Lightning in 20 gauge is what I use for most of my upland bird hunting. I bought it used in like-new condition for about $800. I think that they are about $1200 new.

BTW, I have a good friend named Jerry Jordan, he is a retired tinner and he is training bird dogs and walking horses now. He shoots an SKB O/U.
