Question MP3 Download Sites

Any good mp3 download sites out there, free or otherwise?

I'm willing to pay a monthly fee (modest of course) to download music, but hesitate to join a site that I'm totally unfamiliar with. I'm unclear of the legality of it all at this point in time, hate to pay a yearly fee and have the site shut down after a couple of months. There seems to be a lot of sites out there right now that charge a monthly fee, do the fees go to pay for recording royalities, or in the webmaster's pocket?

I've heard a lot of nasties about Kazaa....spyware, viruses, etc.

Thanks.

I use Kazaa, dont seem to have too many problems. But, i recently heard that there might be a virus out. Oh well, im still using it. I use to use Audiogalaxy, not sure if that is still up. I think there is a place called Bear Share or something like that. look it up.

Kazaa has been installed on my computer for over a year now and no problems whatsoever. In my opinion Kazaa is a LOT better than Napster ever was!

Another vote for WinMX

I have been using WinMX since August with no problems at all. Have found everything from Monty Pyton to Lyle Lovett to the William Tell Overture to Kimigayo (Japanese National Anthem). I have downloaded something like 4 gigabytes of music/comedy with this tool. Easy to use, easy to install, easy to understand, very helpful interface. NO BANNERS, NO VIRUSES, NO INTRUSIVE snoopers (but users can look at other users' library of music, which they set permision to share) Have had no problems, and have had good quality downloads.

Heard Kazaa is in Estonia or Latvia...

There was an article this weekend in the Houston rag on this...Is it true? Does that affect download times/speed? I would imagine that your download has to go through a lot of servers to get to you, making the download pretty slow...True?

WinMX is peer to peer, and can utilize other systems' libraries. Anyway, no problems with WinMX...

Use winmx if you want higher bitrates, it allows up to 320kbs whereas Kazaa only allows 128 at the max. I have found tons of good stuff on Winmx, and I use Imesh occasionally for movies.
