Question Telecommunications

Anyone work in the telecom field? I was in the Army for 8 years as telecom tech and the Govt contractor for same and now it seems like everything has dried up, anyone else have the same experience or any tips? Could really use some encouragement or advice, I have excellent references so I'm sure its not my work abilities, maybe just something about networking with the right people that I'm not doing? Any suggestions?

Depends what you want to do in the telecom field.

I'm sure there are job openings for things like line install or customer support for the major telecom providers.

But if you're looking for the behind the scenes software, good luck. Not impossible but good luck. A start would be:

BellSouth, Verizon, Qwest and SBC to my knowledge are not hiring, but firing.

It sucks. I work for a company that developes software for those companies and others, and it seems everyone has little to no money to spend on new software.

I really depends on what your experience is because telecom is so diverse.

If your experience is in "big-iron" PBX I would advise you to try large companies, municipalities, and public entities (Hospitals, Hotels, etc). Most need either install/repair techs, or programmer analysts.

If your experience is in small key systems it would make more sense to start your own company installing systems for small companies and in private homes. There is a nice market out there installing systems and networks in private homes.

If your experience is more in connectivity cabling contractors are always looking for good people to pull and terminate Cat5, 5+,6, and Fiber.

In a pinch you could try Aerotek. They are a good resource for telecom people looking for work. Check out their website.

Good Luck!

Telecom is dried up. It was one of the hardest hit sectors of the stock market. I was a COnstruction contrator installing fiber optics and running some inspectors for construction and now Im back to my Chef roots. Telecom is dead dead dead.
