Holes in air box......

I noticed yesterday there is two holes on the engine side of the air box, about 7/8" diameter. Nothing plumbs into them , they are just there. Anyone know why? One would think for a true cold air induction you'd plug these holes so you don't suck any warmer air from the engine bay. I know it pulls air through these holes, I noticed two small dirty circles on the filter.
Can anyone enlighten me why my airbox has these two holes?
Thanks, eh.

two holes in the air box would be better than starving it through the fender well IMO. I cut two 2" holes in the bottom of my stock airbox.
