Buying a new 250

I am getting a new 250. I am thinking that the V10 is the way to go rather than the 5.4. Any comments/opinions?

You didn't mention what body style you were looking at, so let me just cover all the bases in the 5.4 vs V10. I had the 5.4 in my '00 supercab, and currently have the V10 in my '02 crew cab. I was fairly satisfied with the 5.4 in my '00 - however I didn't ever tow/haul anything that really needed a 3/4 ton (probably max 3500-4000lbs). I am glad that I got the V10 in my '02. If you are planning on doing much in the way of towing/hauling, but not enough to really justify the PSD, I think the V10 is the way to go. Also, personally I wouldn't even consider the 5.4 in a crew cab, although I know other members are very satisfied with this combination. However, if you don't plan on loading it down much, or are looking at a regular cab/supercab, I wouldn't rule out the 5.4. But, considering that the V10 is a $600MSRP option, I think I would go with it in any configuration over the 5.4. Sure, the gas mileage may suffer a little bit, but I doubt you are buying it for fuel economy! I think my 5.4 averaged MAYBE 2mpg more than my V10 - and I can live with that in exchange for the extra power.

OK - that looks really confusing, so let me see if I can recap:

Cew Cab = V10 minimum
Supercab/regular cab = 5.4 would be acceptable, but would probably go V10 considering the minmal difference in cost

My $.02

coon,

On most tanks I get about 11.8 mpg with mostly rush hour/stop and go driving. On the occasion when I hit the highway, I generally get around 14.5 mpg. I have gotten as high as 16.1 mpg though. In my '00 (5.4), I averaged about 2 mpg more in all driving conditions, with a best tank of 16.5 mpg.

I have registered both of mine as regular passenger vehicles, but I imagine that it may vary from state to state.
