PSD...what are the numbers?

I have searched this site for the pros and cons of the PSD and I would like somebody to answer some questions for me with direct answers.

Without the modifications, what are some mileages for the PSD 4x4 with the 3.73 axles?

I have seen several threads containing "oil change expenses" being a deciding factor. Is it true the PSD requires around 4 gal of oil, and how often should it be changed? Are there any other maintenance considerations I should be aware of?

How many miles can be expected out of the PSD over the galoline engines? This is probably my biggest concern on my next purchase. Does the PSD still have a reputation for outlasting galoline engines. Right now I really can't justify the 250 over the 150 because I use my truck for commuting to and from work everyday, and my current 95 f150 is perfect for this, but I also pull a boat and I am hoping that I can eventually buy a slide in camper that will require an f250 payload.

I am looking for the long haul. I intend on keeping the next truck at least 5 years and probably be putting over 250k miles on it.

Any advice is appreciated.

I am not going to mislead you, it costs more to maintain a diesel then a gasser...I burn propane and use syn...I have 8K on the oil and it is transparent...With by-pass filter system, you can run 30k with the amsoil...I have heard of over 100k on oil with by-pass filter and syn...using oil analysis, and changing filters at 10k...Yes 14-15 qts...

Mileage will offset some of the costs...I have seen up to 20 mpg with the 6 speeds and good driving conditions...keeping your foot out of it...Some people say more, but I have to see it to believe it..

With the proper maint. the norm is 400K...I bought mine because I am going to keep it along time, put alot of miles on it, need to haul trailers, like hotrodding it...I put 30k on a year...

Before I get off on a rant, please understand that I love the PSD. We have over 40 of them where I work. I just think that a lot of people 'sell the V-10 short' It is a very cabable motor that delivers bery good power and good economy for it's application.

Anyway, by far the most important numbers are:

1. Do you REALLY plan on heavy duty use (heavy towing and lots of it)? If your answer is yes you don't really have a choice, get the PSD

2. Are you going to put over 50,000 miles a year or more then 200,000 miles on your truck before replaceing it? If your answer is yes, get the PSD

3. Are you ready to spend twice as much on maintenance ($50 - $75 oil changes every 3-5k, $150 fuel filters every 15k)? If your answer is yes, get the PSD

4. Are you ready to FIND a gas station in your neighborhood that sells quality diesel fuel (remember, diesel just like gas can go bad in less then a month if they don't add conditioners)? If yes, get a PSD

5. Are you ready to part with as much as $4600 over the cost of the 6.8L V-10 at purchase time? if yes get the diesel

The oil changes are $25, if you do them yourself..Wally will do for $42...But I have 8K on my oil...5K is it on the 150 I own w/syn..So its a wash on the oil changes...

Fuel filters are 11.50...if you do them yourself...fuel filter for the 150 is $8..change every 30k on the gasser...

Coolant change is 3x a gasser, A/T is, well use syn and go over 100k...my truck holds 24 qts..

It is more expensive, but by how much ?? not even 2X...

40% savings in fuel mileage, will buy a lot of maintenance..
