Question Your Suggestions for My New CC2504X4

Just wondering if all you knowledgeable F-250 / Super Duty / Diesel people can give this (currently Screw/ thinking about SDuty owner) some advice on ordering my new truck.
I want to bump up to the 250 SD/CC, possibly with the PS Diesel, if I can get a deal on one, or at least the V10. I have read some of the threads on the +/- of diesel vs. V10 and will buy the best deal, I don't plan on towing very much, but lots of long hwy trips.
Now the fun stuff, I want to go to 35" BFG's, a lift is ok if I have to install one, but I don't want to add any suspension stiffening stuff, I read somewhere that some of the lift kits actually soften the ride, is this true?
I'm not a fan of body lift kits either, but I might if it doesn't look silly (like a camaro on a blazer frame).
What rim size is best (16/16.5/17) and what offset works?
Will I have to increase the gear ratio for larger tires?
What other mods do people with lifted SD's have that they recommend.

Just entering the SD ranks, and will appreciate the help.

SDs now use 16" rims, as far as I've seen there are no 16.5 or 17" wheels out there with the SD bolt pattern.

From what I've seen the 4.X gear ratios work well with 35" tires.

Suspension lift kits tend to make vehicles ride stiffer. Some kits may ride softer than others but not softer than stock. You should be able to get by without a lift. I know F350s have no problems with this.

Good luck and keep reading

I can't help with most of your questions as I haven't looked into lifting my rig. I like the looks, but not ready to shell out the $$$ involved to lift it, put bigger tires on it, change gears, yadda yadda. However, I did want to comment on your engine choice. I was in the exact same situation as you - if I found a deal on a PSD, it was gonna be mine, but I required at least the V10. I think with that outlook you will definitely be able to find a rig you like, at a price you like, and will be happy with its performance.

Oh yeah - Tuchy is right about the rims - I haven't come across too many with the correct bolt pattern for these trucks.

jdmnar what kind of milage do you get with the v10? you also mention that you required a v10. Whas this requirement due to power? price? etc. I am asking because I am under the impression that the psd has more capacity.

my gallery, may be for sale by the way... if move to sd

The PSD actually has less capacity than the V10. The reason being is the added weight of the PSD engine. It's only a couple hundred pounds. There are 16.5 wheels in the 8x170mm bolt pattern.

If I were to go with 35" tires then I'd get the optional ratio. 4.30's with the V10. The PSD only comes in 3.73's. Also get the speedo recalabrated. You will loose some towing capacity unless you swap gears.

First the mileage question:

In mainly city/rush hour (i.e. stop and go) driving, I average about 11.8mpg. When I actually get the majority of my miles on the open road, I average about 14.5mpg.

Why did I require the V10? Have you compared tow ratings for a 4x4 SuperCrew with the 5.4 versus the 4x4 Crew Cab F250 with a 5.4? Take a look and you will see that you don't gain anything by getting the 3/4 ton (as far as tow rating). The V10 changes that considerably. Having had the 5.4 in my '00 F250 SuperCab, I decided that the MSRP of $600 for the optional V10 was money well spent.

Besides, didn't you see the EPA report put out yesterday (?) that diesel exhaust fumes cause cancer?

It was all over the web yesterday. Here is one
article that I found just doing a search on "epa diesel cancer". Plenty more where that one came from.

I would not get a sd in a 5.4. I would only even think about the psd or v10. just seems the v10 takes a heck of a beating on the mileage.

had not seen the cancer thing. i remember when they used to say that contact with plasic causes cancer, then it was something else, followed by this or that. personally, i do not plan to sniff the fumes...

cancer?

The EPA stated that the report “concludes that long-term inhalation exposure is likely to pose a lung cancer hazard to humans, as well as damage the lung in other ways depending on exposure.”
“Short-term exposures, it added, “can cause irritation and inflammatory symptoms of a transient nature.”

They dont say it causes cancer they say, likely to pose a cancer hazard. They same thing has been said about peanut butter.

Some gas pumps have a sticker with the same warning but for gasoline.

Greg,

You should know that 4.10 gears are not available in the F250 with the PSD. Only F350 with DRW. If I was going to mod my truck out like that I'd get the standard 3.73 gears and save my $$ for a gear swap. What dealer are you working at?
