F450-f550

Just wanting to see how many people have one. If so, what do you think about it. You gotta love the 4:88 rear end and its take off, awesome.

Talking f450/550

PhillipSVT
I'm running an F550 with a PSD and six speed for work. This is the best medium duty truck I have ever used, I love it. It's a 2wd with a 16' bed, some minor engine mods and acces. bolt ons. The truck has been (with the exception of a clutch repacement) pretty much flawless. Just over 100k on it now. At 19600 lbs it will pull a 6% plus grade at 65mph and still have pedal left. I love rolling past those smoking Cummins/Dodges

I bet you can haul some big loads with that 16' bed how long is the Wheel base of that truck. I t must be hard to make sharp turns in it and drives over rice cars like there were speed bumps.

we had a 4 door 550 with a normal lengh long bed. I did fairly good but the trans started shifting rough and the suspencion started saging. It was a blast to drive without a trailer though. You could almost take anyone from a light up till about 30mph.

Conner, is the 6-speed the same in the F550 as in the F250??? I'm running a manual also and at 44k it's still shifting great. But I know the day is coming when I'll have to replace it. What clutch did you go with??? And did you do the work yourself? Any recomendations???

Not as new as yours, but the familt business has an 89 F-Superduty (450) with the 460 and 5sp. The thing still hauls ***. Same acceleration empty or with 10,000 in the back.

Of course, you still need two feet to depress the clutch at start-up...

the wheel base on mine is 201"--it's just short of 28 feet bumper to bumper. not to easy to park at the local Mc Donalds and definatley not drive thru friendly

i think the f250 thru 550 manuals have the same (lincoln ZF) transmission. i let the local ford dealer instal the replacement clutch, useing ford parts (they helped with some of the cost under part of the waranty) i have been told there are much better pressure plates and clutch discs available than the ford parts--next time i will go with aftermarket. mine lasted almost 100k of hard service so most should do that or more . I think the next mod will be an engine brake, how do you like yours?

thanks. conner

Conner: eeeek!!! You went with the same Ford clutch!!! I've been looking into one by LUK out of NC. Price is around $600, not cheap by no means but I've talked with people that have it on their truck and they think it's been worth the money.
My exhaust brake is by www.westerndiesel.com I went to a Ford rally down in Flordia two years ago and won it (FREE) including installation. It regularly cost in the $500 range. Works GREAT!!! I leave it on all the time except when on interstate and using cruise control. When I'm towing my 30'TT it really helps in slowing down my truck. Saves a lot of brake wear when coming down a steep incline in the mountains.
