What to check when buying a used Diesel

I would like to get a ’99 F250 Powerstroke. What should I look for when checking the condition of the truck? Should a compression test be done on it, or would it be best to just take it by the dealer and ask them to check it out?

I have a very nice ’99 F150 4X4 with the 5.4L but I don’t think it will hold up. The only time the truck is used is when I am pulling a load. After three blown head gaskets Ford replaced the engine and then it blew an oil gasket. I have a 14’ enclosed trailer that I sometimes pull across the country. I will be upgrading to a larger trailer in the near future and think I should go with the powerstroke while I still have a warranty on the new engine.
