What are common problems with superduty's?

I'm planing on getting a 99+ superduty later this year (v-10 or diesel). I'm wondering what kind of problems are common with them.
From what I can tell it sounds like the tranny's are the weak point?? Is there anything special I should look for in a superduty? Any comments will be much appreciated!

Thanks alot,
scott

I know of two problems you should watch out for on the Powerstroke Diesel. Their coolant systems need an additive to prevent cavitation, and some of the earlier PSD had problems with the bolts on the turbo coming loose and causing major problems.

I haven't heard of any problems in the superdutys

not as many aftermarket products as the F150 boys.

will cause jealousy amongst non-superduty owners.

superb abilities and looks of truck may cause vehicle obsession.

having to constantly perform tasks because the chebbies and dodges can't handle the workload.

getting use to the stares of other people in awe.

less concern for small woodland creatures venturing on to the highways and biways.

less concern for small rice-burning vehicles trying to sneak into your lane.

gee, I guess that's about it. Anyone have something to add?

:D :p

Transmissions arent the greatest but other than that its a helluva rig.

Yeah, check the tranny, make sure the fluid has been changed. Change the oil and fluids, and you should see 500K easily :D :D

well, off the top of my head....

early 99's had piston slap issues (V8, V10)
00's had exhaust flutter
psd's can have cackle
weak transmissions, esp with the psd
door ajar light switches stick
brake issues with 4x4's (warped front rotors)
squeaky front 4x4 springs
99' cup holders don't hold cups
wheels sticking to hubs

Thewhiteford pretty much sums it up! That's pretty good.
The only thing I'd add is you'll always be asked: "are they as good as everyone says?" And we know the answer to this:) :) :)

5 most common problems with SuperDuty:

5. Spending money buying more and bigger toys such as campers because, now you can haul it..

4. Having to help your friends and neighbors haul their stuff that is too big for their cars and pickups.

3. Keeping that much metal waxed

2. Parking in the back part of parking lots looking for larger spaces and keeping people from scratchin'em all up.

1. Angry spouses because we find every excuse possible to be away from home driving our trucks..

I would have to agree with most people here.. you will get a lot of jealousy from non-SD owners.

The SuperDuty is one hell of a monster (whichever engine you get) As far as tranny problems go, just get a manual! LOL

Oh Yeah!! you also have to worry about the little imports that get stuck in front of you at night.. they don't tend to like having bright headlights shining in their mirrors (but most of the idiots will still turn around and look right into those lights! LOL MORONS!!)

as far as those go, the only one I would agree with is the squeaky front 4x4 springs.. but thats when you go aftermarket (LIFT!!!)

Ride quality suffers from the f150 car--I mean truck...

V10 man got most of them...Super duty's are real trucks...

Forgot to mention the step ladder that is needed to get in/out...

FordTrkGal Mar 25, 2002 06:15 AM

what Mach1?? step ladder?? puh-lease... just climb in the beast! (or be a wuss and get some running boards) lol

i was gonna get the SD just because i like the looks of it a whole lot more than the F150. I couldn't find one that i wanted to save my life though, so i opted for the 1/2 ton (it's all i really need anyways). But man, the SDs are awesome looking.
