V10man

I'm contacting you because I just took delivery of a F250 with a V10. The search mode is down so I was hoping to get info on the V10s. I noticed you have several mods and was just interested in your likes or dislikes --Things I might look out for . Thanks Don

Hi Don. Congrats on your new truck. I did my mods in stages(as $$ and the wife would permit) First was adding a K&N air filter. I did this right away because I had it from my old 97 F150. I didn't notice any real gains. After a few thousand miles I added a Borla single 3" cat-back system. Again no real noticable gains. At around 50,000 miles I added the Borla header system.(headers and replacement Y pipe) Finally really noticed some power and maybe 1 mpg increase. I don't know if it was just the headers or all of the mods working together that did the trick. Whatever the case it worked. I seriously thought of getting a Superchip or a Diablo chip but having to buy premium fuel all the time just seemed to costly for me. They do offer features that I wish I had though. Speed limiter removal, tranny shift improvements, shift delay removal(timming retard during shifts) and 30 or so hp. My last mod was the Sonnax valve and Tricumulator springs for the transmission. These firm up the shifts really well in the 4R100 transmission. My shifting was really mushy. It seemed that the shifts just sort of slid into each other. You can really tell now when it shifts! All of these mods are CARB approved so you shouldn't have any emmisions or warranty issues. (except for the Sonnax/Tricumulator springs) There are a few other mods out there such as a complete replacement air filter kit, throtle body spacers, transmission kits and superchargers. It all depends on how deep your pockets are and how much power you want.

As for basics, stick with a good oil filter, Motorcraft 820S or better. Most folks say to stay away from Fram. Use the recomended weight oil (5w20 I believe) Keep up on the tranny maintenance, get a real tranny temp guage if you plan on any serious towing. Also, following along with the discussions here and over at www.ford-trucks.com and www. ford-diesel.com is very helpful. Hopes this helps. If you want more info just ask!

Don, Check out this gentleman's site. His name is Stan. He had done many things to his Superduty and has photos of it all. Great info on the header install.

V10 Man-- Thanks for the info. He has done a lot of work to his truck. The pictures of the header install are great. I can't remember did you use the K&N filter replacement or one of the other types. I just got my trailer today and towed it home. It is 5300 pounds dry. I guess I will need to start with some performance mods. Thanks for keeping me up on what is happening. Don

just drive the hell out of it, I only had 2 real problems, 1. throttle idle sensor had it replaced 4 times. 2. right rear anti lock sensor fail and caused the transmission to go screwie on me, no first gear, replaced and the light went away and trans worked great. 3. door light switch
