2008 F350 super duty super cab xl - 6.8l - 5R110W - 4x4

Good Morning & Merry Christmas!!!

I am picking up this truck in a week or two from Southern Cal. It was owned by Cal Trans - has 392,000 miles on it.

I had a 2002 F350 Crew Cab XL 5.4l A/T 4x4 Briefly But, Returned it. I decided for the bigger motor of the 6.8l.

The gentleman i spoke with said it runs good and drives down the road Well.
He said that It wasnt idling properly and their Shop put in a new Mass Air Flow Sensor and a New Battery just a week ago.

Question: What Transmission Fluid goes into this Transmission?

I want to bring a couple quarts with me when I pick it up in case it may be low or possibly have a slow seep somewhere.

Thank You

It takes Mercon SP. If you can't find it or anything compatible, I believe you can use Mercon LV.

Mercon LV or SP.

The V10 is a solid choice. It's an industrial engine.

While it won't give you impressive miles per gallon reports, but it's power is right under that of the PSD.

Just a word of experience... I've worked bringing (driving) vehicles back from places to dealers/private parties, both used, and new. I had a case where I was driving a high mileage truck to a client, and a transmission hose blew out from old age, similar to yours. You may want to check the lines out thoroughly (this includes the transcooler), for deteriorated hoses. This also includes the radiator hoses too. Hoses deteriorate faster in high heat conditions as found in the region you are grabbing this truck from. You don't want one of those hoses popping on the interstate as I've had happen to me before. (It's more nerve-wracking when it's not even your vehicle!)

I WILL be prepared... I will bring 3 tool boxes of tools with me for any repairs needed. I will have to stop at closest auto parts store for parts though (if needed), I plan to bring the correct Engine Oil, ATF with me and I will have to wait on Coolant as I dont know what they actually have in it currently.

My plan is to:
drive the car down to the truck, pick up the truck, pick up a car tow dolly at their local U-Haul, load the car onto that dolly and drive home towing the car. Per my figures it will cost me approx. $850.00 for fuel and the one way dolly rental.
I guess I will find out pretty quick how the transmission is on this truck.

Awesome!

I checked with a local dealership... he said that Per the VIN on this truck..... it was always supposed to have had the Mercon LV.
He also said though,,, that Mercon SP had been Discontinued just this year 2020 and that Mercon LV takes its place in the Mercon SP fluid required transmissions.

Sound right to you Sir?

That is my impression.

pick up a car tow dolly
I would NOT tow with a dolly, spend the extra for a car trailer.

Would you mind to explain as to Why you would Not use a tow dolly but use a car trailer?
(I towed a small pickup before with a tow dolly, no problems what so ever)

Have you ever tried to back up a dolly rig? You can't, you have to unhitch the dolly. Trailering is all around a lot safer.

Oh Ok, that makes sense. I dont plan to back up while towing though.

Also... I am a retired Union LTL Truck Driver and have backed "Doubles" up hundreds of times in the past, not a long ways though.

I will be sure to Not pull into a spot that I must back out of.

Thank You for the Heads Up Sir!!
