How Ford Squeezed 1,050 Lb-Ft Out of Its Power Stroke Diesel
As you'd expect, there were major revisions. Curious as to what the aftermarket will get out of it...
Couple of things I saw. It appears that Ford went to a bed plate for the bottom end. That's a plus in an engine that makes this kind of power. Makes the block assembly a lot stiffer. Interesting that they went with a throttle body type system. My money says they're going to regret it. Not sure I'm a fan of some of the plastic intake parts. Probably as a stock engine, they've put enough development time in it to know it works at least for a 100,000 miles. After that, I'd bet you'll be having to reach in the wallet for new parts. Add propane to it and I'll bet it won't last with EGTs out of sight. And what's with the short skirts on the pistons? Reminds me of the old 454 Saturn blocks that the cylinders ended up wavy as the piston ratcheted it's way down the bore. I didn't hear or see anything in regards to oil quenched pistons. I assume they are putting it in the engine to keep the pistons from going molten. Like any of the new engines since a long time ago, you never know what you're really going to get out of an engine until the public beats the hell outa one. Should be an interesting introduction.
But I'd argue with the tow ratings. Unless the trucks that get this series of engines have at least 22" Bud wheels and matching brakes, stopping a 35,000lb load ain't happening in an emergency stop. In my opinion, they have exceeded the capability of the small truck like an F350. If you need to pull a trailer with that kind of load, you're looking at an F650 minimum.

At that point you might as well own up, get a Class A with some endorsements and do it right or go home.
Don't ask me why... but I am tempted to keep my F150, and get an International CV, and put a nice aluminum flatbed on it.
I sat in one at my local International dealer a few weeks ago. Very nice truck. I like the dash setup.
Would be funny when someone asks... which kind of the big three new pickup you get? Tell'em neither... I got myself an International. LOL
